This is because in African culture, one's mother is considered responsible for one's success or failure. For you to be deified (as Imhotep was later), your mother must also be deified.

Such great men manifesting into deities is widespread in Afraka (Sango and Oduduwa are good examples of earthly men who became deities due to their godly achievements). Remember, not only was Imhotep revered, but so was his mother.

However, Imhotep and his mother were not a deities in the same sense as Osiru or Ptah, but were considered an earthly incarnation of particular deities.

Here Imhotep's mother is pictured as the deity Mwt (a form of Het-Heru), sole wife of Amen-Ra and mother of Khonsu. Her image is juxtaposed with an indigenous lady of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia.

Because of his great achievements he became a deity in his own right. There is misinformation that his deification was something created by the later Greeks, but that is not true. He was already deified by the Kemetyu. Not only he, but also his mother.
