the @WarwickClassNet has a new blog where teachers can share examples of innovative teaching! The inaugural blog, by Sian Squire (Shrewsbury College) and Nina Rinke (Worcester Sixth Form College) is of course numismatic themed! Enjoy!

A cameo made of glass paste showing a laureate Augustus, the dotted border strongly suggests the model was a coin. Glass pastes were a cheaper way to produce products similar to gems, making them more available to a broader population.

In 1892 Gnecchi published an article in RIN where he made the observation that some hundreds of lead coins came out of the Tiber, many of which are Republican types. It's extraordinary, but as far as I can tell they were never published in full. The mind boggles as to purpose.

occasionally in the Roman world women sponsored local coinage, as here on a coin of Eumenea, struck by a high priestess named Bassa, daughter of Kleon. The obverse of the coin shows a bust of Agrippina II and the reverse shows the goddess Cybele.

delighted by this Roman gem showing. a ring! A hare in the middle of the ring, grasshopper on an ear of wheat at the bottom, chariot rider above, helmeted head (Minerva?) and shield either side of the gem. The surrounding gold ring, alas, is more modern.
