Toxic Taricha Thursday!..Rough-skinned Newts (Taricha granulosa) secrete a deadly neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin (TTX). TTX works by binding to certain channels within nerve cells, preventing sodium ions from flowing. This communication breakdown leads to asphyxiation.

That midweek morning mood. . Rather than having true eyelids, a nictitating membrane aids in masking the Red-eyed Tree Frog's (Agalychnis callidryas) striking eyes. This, along with their distinctive "loaf" shape while sleeping, camouflages them from predators!
