We have a new five-part podcast out about the thefts of donor bodies from the Harvard Medical School morgue. I went way beyond the headlines (even visiting with several people who own human remains) and asked the big question: how should we treat the dead?

Thanks, Longreads, for sharing our story about the people who collect organs and skulls, and how it all ties back to Harvard Medical School.

While I'm there, I'll study how journalists can be less transactional and more, well, human, when it comes to working with vulnerable sources. Read more about it (and the rest of the fellows) here: .

This was my first job at @WBUR and you will learn SO MUCH about how radio works, how to write for the ear and to write SHORT. It was my first audio job after years in newspapers and digital pubs and I loved it (despite the early hours.) Reach out if you have Qs.

All five episodes are out now. I also talked to family members of donors about their interrupted grief, explored the dark past of our nation's medical schools, and went to the MĂĽtter Museum in Philly to learn how they're reckoning with their collections.

Another category of information Massachusetts keeps secret (unlike many other states): autopsy reports. And here's a case where it could be really useful to have it:

Some experts say speculation surrounding the case, fueled by photos of the alleged victim's body, shows why full autopsy reports should be public documents, as they are in several other states.

To report on how police respond to sexual assaults, it’s not as simple as requesting the reports and checking their work. Because in Massachusetts, *all* reports of sexual assault (and domestic violence) are secret. We found that hurts survivors (and protects perpetrators).

And just a reminder: No other state has a law that keeps secret all arrests and reports of sexual/domestic violence. @allyjarmanning reported the law has drawn complaints.

@wwuthmann spent a lot of time reporting this investigation, and it was especially difficult because sexual assault police reports aren't public in Massachusetts. But he uncovered a search warrant affidavit that told some of the horrifying story.

Over two years, four women told police Alvin Campbell sexually assaulted them. DNA and other evidence pointed to him. Yet he wasn't arrested until a *fifth* woman came forward. Boston police won't answer questions about why.

The podcast also digs into the dark history of medical schools, where bodysnatching was de rigueur. And I visit the MĂĽtter Museum in Philly as they ask whether they can continue to ethically display so many human remains.
