A light bulb moment for me was realizing that much of the talk about student "motivation" (how to boost it or why a given kid lacks it) is really code for talking about compliance - that is, the extent to which students do whatever we tell them.

Well. If the ? is “what will Kristen do in the name of journalism,” the answer is, “a lot.” Wore an Astros jersey because my editor asked me to, for a story. Ppl have been mostly fine. A few boos. My cousin Eileen, pictured here, was aghast. “What the hell are you wearing?”

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson confronted the lawyer arguing for outlawing affirmative action with how his proposed college admissions system would privilege a white legacy applicant over a Black descendent of slaves. Listen here -->

"New Jersey Bill A2401, the "Responsible Dog Act", would require all owners of 'large dogs' to have a fenced-in yard or face a $500 per day fine. This is utterly ridiculous and a completely flawed approach to 'Responsible Dog Ownership'. " - Hope Kaufman

“Kids are finding it impossible to keep up with our unrealistic expectations of success." As we emerge from the pandemic, there’s a lot of talk about “getting back to normal.” But perhaps the old normal isn’t what we should aim for. @dfkris

Purpose can help people develop more fulfilling lives, but when students' schedules are jam-packed, it's hard to have the space to figure things out.

Today marks 100 years since the #TulsaRaceMassacre and still not enough people know about it. This is why teaching whole history, even the uncomfortable parts, remains so important. #nced

Just when I thought it was safe to watch TV, Chris Christie is back at it, blaming Ts unions for everything wrong with the world, acting like kids haven't been learning and teachers haven't been teaching.

Tonight I realized that so many of my beliefs and philosophies- personally & professionally- can be traced back to what I learned just by being in class with the brilliant and diverse minds in my Central classes & from so many teachers who were ahead of their time!

YES! We need to get them reading again!
When students return in the fall, many will not have read a book in over a year. They should be welcomed back into classrooms stocked with interesting books. They do not need to start the year reading Hamlet; instead, begin with independent reading (choice!) and then book clubs.
