Using measures that capture racial threat from Black Americans compared to Asian and Latinx Americans, we also validate an exclusive effect of the prime in causing threat from Black Americans. /9

Asking people this question primes racial attitudes and increases support for political violence across our entire samples and among white Americans only. /8

When we ask Americans to tell us what comes to mind when they think about the diversification of the country, they often respond with specifically anti-Black concerns: /7

To folks only giving attention to the empirics of changing group sizes, this might come as a surprise. Black Americans are not increasing greatly in size, nor have there been socioeconomic gains for Black folks recently. /6

This has led to a misunderstanding that racial threat is predominantly coming from these changes. We show across a series of experiments that *specifically anti-Black* ideas about the diversification of the U.S. are driving a LOT of violent sentiment among the public. /5
