Can we just all take a moment and imagine a world where tag manufacturers all used the same tagging pliers? That’s the kind of world I want to live in….

On the school run this morning, Arthur age 7 asked me “why is there no farms where Tommy goes to nursery?” I said there used to be but they keep taking them to build things on! He replied:.“But where will our food come from?” Why can a 7 yr old see it but gov can’t? @SteveReedMP.

Whilst I’m on 1…why is these apples allowed to be called ‘seasonal’ when they are from NZ? Everything is in ‘season’ somewhere in the world in a 12 month period!! Completely misleading! @Tesco @DanielZeichner @SteveReedMP

Then what? Who knows? 🤷‍♂️ we need clarity and we need it fast. We all want to make our businesses more resilient, of course we do. But there are many many farming businesses on a knife edge. You have pulled the rug from under so many with absolutely no warning ��️.

There has been winners and losers from SFI, and those that have taken advantage of it. So perhaps it did need tweaking, but it didn’t need stopping that’s for sure! I was lucky to get in SFI quite early but only have 18months of the agreement left.

We are soon to be the only country in Europe to have no land based subsidy payment. That’s fine. But will. We still be importing foods from those that do have them? Of course we will!.

So what do you suggest I do? Add the cost of the extra bales I need to buy in this winter to my customers shopping bills? There’s nothing stopping me I know. But do you honestly think the customer will pay? I’m not so sure!.

In years gone by we had a safety that landed in our bank accounts each December to help elevate such unexpected financial pressures. That’s gone. Fair enough you want to make farming more profitable instead. Great.

So now it looks like I shall be in the market for some fodder this coming winter, which due to simple supply and demand is at a very high price.

These bales will feed our cows and sheep throughout winter, which all of their output goes to feeding our local community through various different channels of direct sales.

Iv just baled a field of hay this time last year I made 36 bales off it. This year I’ve made 7. There’s only 1 thing different and that’s rainfall. I still have all the same costs associated with these 7 bales as I did with my 36 last year….
