Stories connect humans to humans. We may not walk in the same communities, but the sentences and paragraphs we craft help us understand and learn from each other. The highest and best use of words is not to divide but to illuminate.

I’ve been a storyteller since elementary school. English was BY FAR my favorite class. My love of words put me on a path to write for my high school and college newspapers and enjoy a career as a journalist and author.

In addition, I tested positive for the BRCA1 genetic mutation, making it far more likely that I’d also develop breast cancer. The operation was life-affirming, and I was thrilled and relieved I had the OPTION to TAKE CONTROL!!!.

The surgeon created new breasts out of my own belly fat so I could avoid getting implants. Total operating time: 11.5 hours. And I don’t regret a second. My mother, aunt, and grandmother all died of breast or ovarian cancer.

Here I am during my last mammogram on June 15, 2012. I’m grinning because I knew I’d never have to undergo this painful procedure again. Two months later, I’d be in an operating room undergoing a preventative double mastectomy. A thread.
