✨ Fight, Magic, Items is OUT NOW! ✨
Today's release day for my history of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and the rise of Japanese RPGs in the west. It's a deeply personal story about JRPGs and the people who made them.
Available everywhere.

My brother worked on Arrow and said Amell regularly refused to leave his trailer if he wasn't getting his way, so he's actually very much in favour of labour strikes.
My contribution to this thread was going to be that I once spent the night in a hostel across the street from the Queen of England in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with pics to prove it, but you all have... greatly surpassed this tame story.
Grade 7. I needed parental permission to go to the corner store at recess. My dad gave me a note covering the whole year, but nope. So, he printed off and signed 100+ undated letters. I kept them in my cubby & filled in the date before recess. My principal wasn't impressed.
I used to think this way, until I questioned why—if I was truly colour/gender-blind—my Goodreads stats showed I read 80% white dudes. The industry (& the world) is heavily tilted toward white men. If you don’t make these choices consciously, someone else makes them for you.
BREAKING: Fox News has abruptly settled the defamation case brought by Dominion, after a trial jury was selected and lawyers waited in the courtroom to give their openings
Several years ago, while traveling the south Oregon coast, I stopped at a gas station/antique shop/dive diner for lunch. The owner was convinced I was

from Breaking Bad. Asked me several times, then watched me suspiciously the whole time I ate my beef dip.
Every time you complain about Martin, Rothfuss, or Lynch taking a long time to complete their series, you have to buy the first volume of a completed epic fantasy series by a non-male or BIPOC author.
Me as a teen reading Lord of the Rings: "But. Why does Sauron want to make the world such a shitty place when it could be so awesome and beautiful? It makes no sense."
Me in my 30s watching Trump raze the west to the ground because he has daddy issues: "Oh."
The Time War story has been incredible, and couldn't have happened to two better people, but "relatively unknown?" It had 6.5k+ Amazon ratings and won a Hugo, Nebula, and BFSA.
If that's "relatively unknown," we're all fucked.
Dude coulda had it all. He coulda built spaceships and future cars, people would’ve loved him. Solved cold fusion. He coulda had a Fortnite skin and ended up next to Edison and Tesla in the history books without ever having to work a day in his life. But instead he chose… this.
Holy Shit. Elon Musk just popped into a Twitter Spaces chat with a bunch of journalists. He was called out by journalist Drew Harrell, who he banned, for lying about posting links to his private information, then leaves almost immediately after being pressed. Here is the exchange
Everybody always talks about Stephen King writing all those books while high, but nobody ever mentions the moms pumping out quality books on two hours sleep each night ‘cause they got small kids.
The requirement nowadays for writers to also be marketing-savvy performance artists with inexhaustible effort and social stamina isn’t going to end well.
Orca expert here! If you see an orca ramming a boat, DON'T approach it. They only do that when the ruling class of billionaires are ruining the planet and society to satiate their endless obsession with wealth and hegemony.
It’s because the pandemic isn’t over. It’s just that the most privileged among us have decided they’re tried of being in a pandemic so the narrative has shifted to make *them* feel comfortable at the expense of parents, marginalized communities, immunocompromised people, etc.
lol
Twitter uses a service to capture analytics data for outbound links (using the domain), and that service lost API access (presumably due to the new system that charges companies API access), so now outbound links aren't working.
BREAKING: Moderna says it will keep its Covid vaccine free for all people in the U.S.—reversing course on its planned 400% price increase—one day after Bernie Sanders said he would force the CEO to testify.
Neither platform would do this if they'd just give users what they want—chronological feeds of content by the people they've explicitly chosen to follow—instead of filling their feeds with unwanted content and rewarding algorithmic attention to intentionally polarizing content.
but also, sure is funny reading this glowing write up of launcher’s accomplishments, dated multiple weeks after it was shut down and employees were laid off
Capitalism: Kids these days don’t wanna work. They’re lazy. We can’t find anyone to hire. They jump from job to job. No loyalty at all.
Also capitalism: Our investors made a lot of money this year but not a loooooooot of money so youre fired
Sounds like layoffs at G4. Not sure how widespread but at least three confirmed. Heart goes out to every affected.
The channel has been back for less than a year and last I knew was managed by Comcast CEO's son.
My DMs are open if anyone wants to share their story.
This is horrific—but one aspect not being shared via social media is that the school district is banning the harassers from district events/property. You *have* to immediately discredit and punish such behaviour, rather than treat it as an alternative viewpoint.
Grandparents attending a school track meet in Kelowna stopped the event and demanded a 9 year-old female student be examined to make sure they weren't a boy competing in a girls event.
Or.
Hear me out.
Governments use their regulatory powers to limit price gouging by food producers turning huge profits and hiding behind excuses about inflation.
As a dad with two girls, I regularly hear, "Oh. You're in for it!" or "I'm glad I have boys. They're so much easier."
But, boys aren't easier to raise. They're just as challenging as girls. Society, however, has taught us to hold boys (and men) to lower standards than girls.
The Golden Age of Japanese RPGs inspired an entire generation of SFF writers. I spoke with

🚨 WARNING: Proud dad story incoming. 🚨
Last week, one of my daughter's kindergarten classmates got scraped up after a fall at recess. Some of the older kids laughed at her, which obviously made her feel sad.
@LeeAHarris
I feel like if you're going to get arrested anywhere, Switzerland is probably the place. I have friends who got arrested in Nicaragua. Not a good place to get arrested.
Writers don't need help writing—we're good at that—we need help securing proper compensation for our work because we're being ground to dust by capitalism and a general misunderstanding of the work/expertise/effort required to create "good writing" instead of just "writing."
The least realistic thing about epic fantasy is how the bad guys are always, like, trollocs, skullbearers, goblins, and fallen gods instead of rich landowning fascists and their army of Dunning-Kruger zealots.
Breath of the Wild (and now TotK) isn't given enough credit for its sound. Or, more specifically, its lack of sound. Few games embrace silence the way those games do—using music to accentuate, rather than define. It's one of the key features for making the world feel alive.
AND THEN, a bunch of her classmates wanted join her—so they've formed a cadre of kindergarten students with the responsibility of helping other kids who get hurt or laughed at during recess.
How would you be described if you were a character in an epic fantasy novel?
"He was of middling height, but with well-turned calves and broad across the chest. Eyes the colour of a cornfield sky crinkled at the corners with his laugh, but also spoke of bone-weary tiredness."
Hey! I'm actively seeking artists of traditionally underrepresented backgrounds (women, LGBTQ, PoC, etc) to feature on

I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks
@jeannette_ng
giving up an incredibly rare and intensely personal moment of victory to provide a voice for the aggrieved residents of Hong Kong was in the wrong has missed the entire point of SF's revolutionary roots. Bravo to her.
I've been waiting almost a year to say I've sold my first book, y'all! "Fight, Magic, Items: The History of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and the Rise of Japanese RPGs in the West" is coming *this October* from

I always knew the best way to heal Middle-earth was to let Sauron off the hook. Destroying the ring made the orcs feel sad, and just drove the wedge deeper between them and the Free Peoples.
I recently discovered

about SFF, finding your style, and why it's so important for artists to believe in their work and self-promote:
I knew Facebook opening up to non-college students would be bad because it gave parents a new way to annoy their kids, but I didn't expect it to:
a) lead to the rise of fascism;
b) aid the return of measles to North America;
c) abet in genocide, or
d) threaten privacy.
It's wild how everything just fucking sucks for regular people now. Climate? Sucks. Education? Sucks and is super expensive. Healthcare, wages, costs? Getting worse. And all because a small number of people value the liberty of profit and corporations over the liberty of people.
One of these is an under-the-radar open world RPG released by Nintendo for the Wii U in 2015 and the other is a hugely popular open world RPG released by Nintendo as its flagship 2022 holiday title. Videogames, man.
As people start seriously considering leaving Twitter, I've set up an SFF writers discord for the lovely community of friends and fellow writers I've met here on Twitter.

Trying to sell this to aspiring writers as any sort of actionable blueprint is disingenuous at best, and actively malicious at worst. The only "clever" lesson here is for publishers to recognize that books exists and can still sell copies beyond their release day.
(The first day, she plunked herself right outside the recess door and waited for kids who needed help. She wanted to be sure they knew where to find her. I gave her the idea that she could just let everyone know she'd be playing on the playground if they needed her.)
