One-on-one with QB1.
UNC’s Drake Make on the transformative power of the last dozen months — including dispelling transfer rumors from Chick-fil-A — and what’s ahead as this new season dawns.
Another year in the sun is here:
From the UNC locker room
@joemazurabc11
: "You know those guys that you tried to dunk on have a family, right?"
Nassir Little: "Well, their family should tell them to move."
"Just for us as UNC to be able to say we won that game, and for our fans and everybody to have those bragging rights forever -- I guess until we play them in a situation like that again -- it feels great."
-- Armando Bacot
Hubert Davis says when UNC arrived in Tallahassee on Sunday to check into the team hotel, 20-25 boxes of Lemon Oreo cookies were there waiting on the Tar Heels.
UNC guard RJ Davis with an ice pack on his swollen right eye here in the postgame. Big man Armando Bacot says he got five chipped teeth from a collision with Kyle Filipowski.
What set off Luke Maye's 27-point second half?
Theo Pinson says he heard one Wolfpack player tell another: "You can guard him. He's not that athletic."
Pinson: "Once I heard that, I said, 'They done talked to the wrong one.' "
How about this from Roy on UNC lacking passion in the first half:
"Probably the thing I despise more than anything in basketball or in life is somebody trying to be cool."
Armando Bacot on UConn’s Cam Spencer, who became a UNC antagonist tonight here at the Garden:
“Yeah, he was saying things he wouldn’t say to me if we were in the park or something. But it’s all good. He had a great game, so credit to him.”
Tar Heel Sports Network setup courtside here in Chapel Hill ahead UNC and Charleston Southern. First home game for Carolina since the death of Eric Montross. Play-by-play man Jones Angell working solo tonight and keeping a seat open in tribute.
Among many interesting things here, Armando Bacot has an all-timer of a line on Caleb Love.
"Yeah, it was a divorce. But I mean, we still love him. We've got kids together."
Armando Bacot holds court on a number of topics — his
#UNC
return, Tar Heels’ new transfer class, Caleb Love’s departure, and more — in this exclusive chat with
@adam_smith_IC
.
First substantive public comments from the big man since March:
Who are the schools who came after UNC QB Drake Maye offering millions to transfer?
Mack Brown: "I can't say that and don't ask Drake. You know who they are. Just look at all the ones who are getting all the top recruits."
If this was Drake Maye’s final UNC home game at Kenan Stadium, he says:
“Just a fairy-tale ending. No better way, against a rival, with the fans storming the field on Senior Night. A lot of emotions.”
After losing to Clemson here, Armando Bacot and Harrison Ingram say in the postgame that the ominous warning signs for UNC included several players showing up late to pregame warmups today.
Cole Anthony oozing confidence on UNC and the approaching ACC tourney:
"If I was a different team I wouldn't want to see us, just the scariest bottom seed you've ever seen. We're hungry. I think at the level we're playing at right now, we're a top 10 team in the country easily."
Armando Bacot stops for a quick radio spot with Jones Angell and Tyler Hansbrough after UNC completes its defeat of Michigan State to move on to the Sweet 16.
Last 3 games for Armando Bacot:
-- 21 points, 17 rebounds at Notre Dame
-- 29 points, 22 rebounds vs. Virginia
-- 29 points, 12 rebounds vs. Georgia Tech
31 of 47 from the field for 65.9-percent shooting
Hearing from people with UNC that the Tar Heels saw The Lion King on Broadway here Thursday night. And the team walked from the hotel to MSG today for the Ohio State game, rather than busing a couple blocks.
Just picture the likes of Armando Bacot strolling the NYC streets.
Classy touch by Georgia Tech here. Pregame moment of silence in honor of UNC’s Eric Montross, with his photo displayed on the video boards over the court.
Satisfaction beaming off Kenny Williams in the UNC locker room. Said he took a moment to look around near the end as PNC emptied.
"That's the best part. State, they really hate to see us win. The fact that we're coming into their house and winning makes it that much better."
RJ Davis says Marcus Paige was one of his favorite players growing up. Davis says the Kris Jenkins buzzer beater that won the 2016 national title game for Villanova knocked the breath out of him.
"It was a moment that I kind of gasped for air, because I wanted UNC to win."
"That's an unreal experience. Definitely one of the reasons that pulled me here, a game like that." -- Brady Manek
He says Jordan being here made it "30 times better."
Here’s a look at Paxson Wojcik’s gashed forehead, the result of an accidental elbow from Armando Bacot in UNC’s pregame shootaround of all things. Wojcik says he needed 10 stitches before tip-off tonight.

UNC coach Mack Brown says he was relaying word upstairs to offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey that’s enough of the wildcat formation after App State stuffed it twice in the first quarter.
“I was on (the headset) pretty quickly, and Chip agreed.”
On UNC senior Leaky Black, navigating the forces beneath the surface. Anxiety has turned him numb at times.
In Jackie Manuel, he has found a mental guide, spiritual leader and big brother to share the journey.
"It was just like looking into a mirror."
Hubert Davis says he expects UNC freshman forward Jalen Washington (knee surgery, long recovery and rehab process) to be "full go" as early as next week.
After their ACC opener on Sunday at Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels don't play again until Dec. 10 against Georgia Tech.
UNC coach Mack Brown on the emergency board of trustees meeting today:
“That meeting is called to try to figure out all the best options for Tez Walker. We need to all get in the same room and figure out what’s best for the young man.”
Video from Armando Bacot in the UNC locker room after the Tar Heels lose at Pitt.
As the record button was pushed, starts with: "I don't know how we all can't come in and be locked in and give such a sh---y performance."
Caleb Love says he made eye contact with Michael Jordan after hitting his first 3-pointer in the game's opening minutes.
Love says he didn't necessarily mean to do that, but it was almost impossible not to look over courtside with Jordan sitting there.
A tearful embrace between Mack Brown and

Brooks missed the entirety of the 2022 season due to injury.
In his return to football tonight, he led the

in rushing yards.
College Football is back.
There's no shortage of coaches on the UNC staff who could double as shot doctors, and Caleb Love has enlisted Jeff Lebo's help while seeking to cure his slump.
"Every morning, I'm in the gym with him."
On Love's extra work and step in a better direction:
UNC freshman Jalen Washington last played in a HS game in March 2021, and last played in an AAU game in July 2021. So his college debut, some 17 months later, registers as special.
"It's a big milestone. I'm glad that I could check the box of being able to play my first game."
ACC teams are responsible for Gonzaga's last four losses in the NCAA Tournament:
2018: Florida State in the Sweet 16
2017: North Carolina in the championship
2016: Syracuse in the Sweet 16
2015: Duke in the Elite Eight
How about this:
By official proclamation of the
@BurlingtonNC
city council, Wednesday, July 22 will be recognized as Bob Sutton Day in this fair town, to honor his 25-year run as sports editor of the Times-News.
Congrats, well-deserved, and much love to The General

Armando Bacot says he went to bed last night telling his family he probably wouldn't play vs. Louisville. "But I woke up this morning feeling good. I don't know how, but I did.
Hubert Davis says he would've used Leaky Black some at the 5 if UNC didn't have Bacot and Pete Nance.
Hearing that UNC athletic trainer Doug Halverson was busy during timeouts tonight working on Armando Bacot's busted lip with vaseline and other remedies. Like a cutman in boxing.
Garrison Brooks on the dust-up with Grayson Allen:
"I wasn't hurt, but I was kind of upset. He was running by me, I feel like he kind of stuck his leg out, but that's what he does. It didn't surprise me."
UNC’s defense tonight:
- NC State’s 26.9-percent shooting = worst FG percentage for the Wolfpack vs. Tar Heels since at least 1954.
- Fewest points (54) allowed against NC State since 2001.
- Also, Harrison Ingram’s 19 rebounds most ever for UNC player vs. NC State.
Curt Cignetti of
@ElonFootball
had the juice flowing with this:
"You're a different person in the offseason. You can always tell when football's getting close, because you can feel yourself starting to morph."
[pause]
[eyebrow raise]
"I feel myself morphing right now."

UNC coach Mack Brown on the move to have Tez Walker with the NC state flag as the Tar Heels ran out prior to kickoff vs. Syracuse:
“We had him carry the flag out, because we thought the whole state rallied behind him. That was really a cool moment.”
Honored and thrilled to be joining the awesome IC team, and super excited to get started next week. Immeasurably grateful, too, for the 22-year run with my hometown
@thetimesnews
. Quite a ride for this kid from Mebane. Will wrap it up with

coverage.
UNC has cracked the top 10 in the NET (now No. 9) and KenPom (now No. 8) after winning at Clemson. Tar Heels have climbed in the computers across the last 2½ weeks. They were 37 in the NET and 20 in KenPom entering the Oklahoma game on Dec. 20.

Noah, who wants to be a sports reporter, is attending

with the Dream on 3 organization. Maye told him: “Remember, go Heels, baby. No Clemson.”
Josh Downs on UNC's fourth straight win over Duke:
"It was a blessing. I thank God for that win and, I mean, everybody in the locker room felt the same way. We kept the bell, and we didn't lose to the little brother."
One big tough dude to another, Tyler Hansbrough made it a point to pass the UNC rebounding torch to Armando Bacot in person. Just as Phil Ford did for him, when he became UNC's career scoring leader.
On an honor rather than an obligation for Hansbrough:

RJ Davis says UNC probably will have Paxson Wojcik or Creighton Lebo face-guard him during practice this afternoon, as a means of trying to prepare for the extra defensive attention Duke gave him in the first meeting between the teams.
RJ Davis (
@ariidavis_
) career-high 42 points tonight:
- 10th-most points in any game by UNC player
- Smith Center record for any college game
- Third-most points by UNC player in ACC regular-season game
- Most UNC points since Shammond Williams had 42 at GaTech 2OT in 1998
Theo Pinson on
#UNC
’s assignment in the NCAA tourney:
"We'd be lying if we said we didn't want to play in Charlotte, that's like a home game for us. I'm pretty sure those fans in Charlotte would love for us to be there. I hope we're there. Feel like we deserve it."
Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner says "Purdue legitimately could possibly go 40-0" in commending UNC's recent improvements, and adds "I think they're good enough to win the ACC league championship this year" in continuing to commend UNC.
UNC coach Mack Brown on the shooting in Charlottesville. He has a daughter who's a UVa faculty member.
"We've got to be smarter and we've got to figure this thing out. We can't keep having useless deaths. That's not the news you want to wake up to."
UNC coach Mack Brown says new defensive coordinator Geoff Collins has turned down “about 8” jobs since his firing at Georgia Tech. And he’s had 2 calls about jobs since the Tar Heels hired him, Brown says.
A week ago tonight Armando Bacot went down with an ankle sprain, forcing him to limp off at UVa after just 78 seconds of game time.
Since then for the UNC big man:
-- 14 points, 16 boards in win at Louisville
-- 20 points, 16 boards in win over BC
-- a combined 13-for-19 on FGs
Sunday column in tribute to Bob Sutton (
@tnBobSutton
), and a tireless 25-year run that made him the sports voice for Burlington and Alamance County.
Friend, mentor and father figure to the branches of his coaching tree. We're his guys, his indebted sons.
UNC coach Hubert Davis says Armando Bacot told him his ankle sprain tonight isn’t as bad as the ones he suffered in the Final Four last season and at UVa earlier this season.

Mack Brown quipped "this team has never lost a game on the road" in his postgame remarks.
Maybe overlooked in all the madness up here at App State, UNC managed to snap its seven-game losing skid in games away from home.
First road win for the Tar Heels since Dec. 12, 2020.
UNC's Caleb Love asked about tweet he posted Thursday, and commented on his relationship with RJ Davis. Full remarks in link.
"That's my brother, and I love him. We don't got nothing going on, no beef, no none of that, that they tried to label onto us."
At the end of monumental Final Four theater, there was RJ Davis, aglow outside UNC's locker room.
Duke had been denied again, and he got a glimpse of the finality across the hallway.
"It's very satisfying, but at the same time, the job is not finished."
UNC coach Mack Brown on WR Tez Walker’s NCAA case:
“We still haven’t heard anything from the NCAA on Tez. We’re hoping to hear something, at least on the process, today.”
Caleb Love, all smiles, on the breakaway windmill dunk attempt that didn't go down:
"I caught a flat tire. I definitely was going to windmill that. We'll get 'em next time."
Teddy Valentine, coming down the tunnel here at UNC, after the refs have gotten loose on the court. He reaches up and grabs the ankle of a seated Roy Williams
"Hey! Careful now!" Pretty fun little moment between those two. Lots of chuckles. They exchanged fist bumps.
UNC team spokesman says the Tar Heels expect big man Armando Bacot (sprained left ankle) to try to play today here at Louisville. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. and Bacot has been out participating in warmups.
While the CAA is expected to suspend football today and not compete as a league this fall,
@ElonFootball
will forge ahead.
The Phoenix is making plans to play this fall and will pursue an independent schedule,
@thetimesnews
has learned.

Garrett Walston stayed with UNC for a sixth year to make a run at something special. There's more motivation, too, with his brother pitching in the Diamondbacks farm system.
"I can't let my little brother be the only one in the family that gets drafted."
On Kenny Smith's theory that Joel Berry perhaps could become Carolina's version of Christian Laettner as a decorated NCAA champion, Theo Pinson says:
"What does that mean? I thought everybody hated Christian Laettner."
Ready to ride for his final college season, UNC running back Ty Chandler has been shaped by an upbringing in rural Mississippi that could seem taken a novel.
His dad is Chico. His grandpa is Too Tall. His horse is named Trouble. And there's much more.
Ahead of tonight’s UNC-Syracuse matchup, sixth man Seth Trimble is warming up for the Tar Heels here at the former Carrier Dome. Trimble has missed Carolina’s last two games due to an upper-body injury.
UNC coach Hubert Davis says guard Cormac Ryan (ankle) is “getting better each day.” Still uncertain on Ryan’s availability for Tennessee on Wednesday night, though. Ryan will try to practice today, Davis says.
Shot clock getting low there with RJ Davis dribbling, Leaky Black in the corner in front of us shouts "don't play with it!" as a warning about the time.
Davis passes to Black, who sinks a jumper at the shot clock horn. Big smile from Leaky on his way back on defense.
UNC's Drake Maye on the UVa shooting. Devin Chandler is from Huntersville, NC. Area where Maye grew up.
"It's just a tragedy any time something that reckless happens. Just hearing the story of what happened, it's just awful news. Thoughts and prayers out to the UVa community."
Sam Howell, whose Washington Commanders played Thursday night, will be presented with his Patterson Medal from 2022 here during the UNC-Syracuse game today. Top athletic honor awarded annually at Carolina.
