New paper led by Mark Kirk using .32 years of data for .>1000 tiger salamanders .to identify fitness effects of environmental variation. Some conditions affect all salamanders, while others have morph-specific effects.@WhitemanLab .

VERY proud of Rowan Ward for their first presentation at a national meeting!! #Evol2023. And ever impressed by the supportive mentoring from @sophiaanner . It’s the people that make the science fun and exciting. This is the photo you get when you say .“Say Rhagoletis!!”

Takeaway 3) Shifts in fly lifecycle timing increased overlap in breeding time in our experiment. In the wild, climate warming could increase gene flow and limit divergence between apple-haw flies — a textbook example of rapid adaptation & speciation.

Takeaway 2) While flies shift their lifecycles earlier under warmer temperatures, their parasitoid wasps seem insensitive to these temp changes. This may cause a mismatch in phenology for these co-evolved species.

Takeaway 1) Very closely related fly populations adapted to different host plants (apple and hawthorn) show different extents and types of responses to climate warming. This highlights the complexity of predicting consequences of climate warming in natural systems.
