The election is over, but the battle is not. The passion and commitment we brought to this campaign must now be brought forward to the bigger, even harder campaigns that face us. Together we’ll fight for the promise of Kansas and America. Damn the torpedoes. Full speed ahead.

going to wake up to find that those bland assurances will not translate to common-sense, centrist votes. The real agenda will now unfold, and will be virtually veto-proof. There is a very real threat of long-term damage to our beloved Kansas.

in our modes of conversation and communication, in the roles of balanced facts and integrity, and in what it means to be an American. This cannot be sugar-coated. At the state level, those who voted for extremists masquerading as “common-sense, centrist problem solvers” are ...

I regret nothing. THANK YOU from every chamber of my heart for your support, humor, hard work and great ideas. Now we must face a number of cold, hard facts: It is a dangerous time, both locally and nationally. A sea change is occurring ...

I found great joy in building and implementing this campaign, in really getting to know our community, and in finding new friends I would never have met had I not undertaken this challenge. I have learned valuable lessons on this grand adventure. I treasure every moment of it.

The additional votes needed to overcome my opponent’s slim majority haven’t materialized. The election process was impeccable; I do not challenge the outcome. Thank you to the dedicated election workers who made this happen. I called my opponent today and acknowledged he won.

I do not know what these young men's politics were, or would have been. Their sacrifices lie in a small, sacred place of memory and pain that is not political. Our obligation to them is to try to understand the passions and convictions so many were willing to sacrifice for.

On Nov. 2, 1944 Melvin Cohn parachuted from the B29 where he was a radio operator. He landed in German territory where he was shot, reportedly after being tortured. Melvin was 19 years old. There are so few words in this telling, and so much sorrow.

There are vanishingly few left alive who knew my Uncle Ace. His story is just one of the millions who have been wounded or died for our country. Here’s one more of those stories: Melvin Cohn. He was my friend (and fellow HD28 resident) Joel Levine’s uncle.

He was one of 600 Americans and 1,200 South Koreans killed during that 14-day battle. Their sacrifice secured the Pusan Perimeter, preserving the South Korean government and the creation of today’s Republic of Korea (South Korea). He was 26. He left no wife, no offspring.

My Uncle Ace (originally Isadore) Allen immigrated to this country before WWII. He served in the U.S. Army in WWII, reached the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, and continued his service into the Korean War. There he was killed in action at the Naktong Bulge on August 9, 1950.

He is to a true hero; a man whose memory I took into every patient encounter I had during my many years of working at the VA hospitals in Kansas City and Topeka, and into every day of working for an America I think he would be proud of.

My dear friends, A campaign update is coming shortly, after we receive updated information. Meanwhile, I feel more strongly than ever, and more dedicated than ever, to the causes that brought all of us to this campaign. Today’s message is to my Uncle Ace:

Win or lose, this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, shared with some of the best people I’ve ever known. I will forever treasure the enthusiasm and hard work and faith in me shown by you, our volunteers, and donors. I will keep you posted as things develop.

I’ve spoken with people far more capable than me of understanding this glaring disparity—and they were as baffled as I. It is going to take real work to try to sort this out. For now, our team is staying on top of the situation.

Harris/Walz won 54% compared to Trump’s 45%. Sharice Davids won 57% compared to Reddy’s 43%. Yet ALL of the closely fought JoCo races for the Kansas House and Senate went to extremist Republicans, except where the final results are pending.

It may take several days for this to clarify, as mail-in ballots are received and provisional ballots are processed. I am not conceding at this point. The voting patterns in Johnson County were very strange. For example, the good guys dominated at the top of the ticket.

The Tuesday election was a real stinker at almost every level. In the case of my election: it is still undecided, just as it was at this time two years ago. With 12,773 votes cast, my opponent's lead shrunk from 235 last night to 159 as of this writing.

@joco I thank my volunteers for your faith and confidence. And I thank you, the people of HD28, who opened your doors to me, took photos with me, put out signs for me, spread the word with your neighbors, gave me confidence that this community is worth fighting hard for.

@joco The journey started with my own door-knocking, but I wasn’t alone for long. Dozens of friends joined the effort, so that in the last months of the campaign we had 16 experienced canvassers. Six of them I met while canvassing! They were just a part of our extraordinary team
