Fear based idolizing of the biblical text can take far more credit for our earth mess than most realize. This is why ex-fundamentalists are as loud as we are. We see the genocidal influence of toxic theological practice everywhere we turn every hour of the day.

The controversy surrounding the womens championship game feels so American. Young people doing their thing. Old white guys policing/racially inciting. Black community rightly responds. And now the LSU player chirps on & on bringing attention to herself with no mentor stepping in?.

Last week, 2 Denver youths died due to gun violence and the loudest voices are calling for harsher punishments for youth offenders. The loudest voices are always the voice of "peacekeepers" while the ones Jesus described as blessed are the "peacemakers.".

The idea of peacekeeping usually involves rhetoric surrounding toughness and law & order. Harsher consequences for offenders. The idea of peacemaking is about changing the conditions that produce violence and harm. Deeply intentional relationships with those who are struggling.

Saturday nights have been for goofing around with a blank canvas & cheap paints. Not working, not scrolling, not perfection. Just allowing for childlike whateverness.

Humans are in pain. Humans in pain need to connect with humans trained in caring for trauma. Healing begins & ends in compassionate relationship. Police officers with guns on their hips are not trained in compassionate relationships. They’re trained to eliminate “threats”.

The fact that these student athletes are out here performing at this level, following coaches instructions, remaining calm in the clutch in light of the chaos they’ve witnessed & overcome in these past 4 years?. They’ll never be adequately appreciated but let’s give it a try.

As we watch the NCAA tourney, it seems important to remember that these young men & women entertaining us & receiving our scrutiny have endured a global pandemic, a recent attempt to over throw their government, and mass shootings, many on college campuses, at a mind numbing pace.
