Behind it came the white strangers, with their laws, their schools, their churches, and their hunger for land. The prophecy had come to pass.

Many years later, when the sound of thunder came not from the sky but from the ground, the prophecy was remembered. A great black engine, huffing smoke and breathing fire, crept across the land on shiny rails. It was the iron snake Syokimau had spoken of.

“It is not the snake of the forest,” she warned. “It is a thing made by the strangers. Its coming will bring sorrow, but also a new world that our children must endure.”.

Our land will change, our freedom will wither, and the spirits of our ancestors will be restless.”.The people were afraid. Some laughed nervously, saying, “How can a snake be made of iron? How can it spit fire?” But Syokimau’s eyes blazed.

The people murmured, but she lifted her hand. > “I see a long iron snake, its body stretching from the big water into the heart of our land. It will spit smoke and fire as it crawls. Upon its back will ride the strangers. Wherever the snake passes, our people will cry.

“I see a strange time coming,” she said. “From the rising sun, from the great water, strangers will appear. Their skin will be like meat, but their hair will be like that of a sheep. They will speak a tongue we do not know, and their ways will not be ours.”.

When she spoke, people listened, for her words carried the weight of truth. One evening, as the people gathered under the great mugumo tree, Syokimau rose to speak. Her face was troubled, and her voice carried sorrow.
