CA's electricity supply curve from yesterday would likely have surprised even the most optimistic believers 15 years ago. Also check out that 8pm datapoint: nearly 10 GW of batteries handling the duck curve (along with natural gas of course)
Solar becomes top source of electricity in California: Over the past 12 months, solar power has become California’s largest source of electricity, a trend likely to continue. #Photovoltaics #EnergyStorage #RenewableEnergy

A 75% cut to the NSF engineering directorate and a 67% cut to Math and Physical Sciences has ~0 effect on the budget and deficit. It is however a statement of values by those who put it out.
The proposed budget for @NSF in 2026 is at the level even lower than what was in 2006. More than 50% budget cut this year expecting the success rate drops to 7%. The research funding on AI is increased by about 10%. @unccharlotte

Two related data points: . 1) We likely have the smallest entering PhD cohort ever in the history of our program. 2) Some of our best research-oriented undergrads, Americans with offers at the best US programs, have chosen to pursue their PhD abroad given everything happening.
The brain drain is happening now. Reddit is flooded with kids who planned to do their STEM PhDs looking for advice to apply in Europe. All because a huge chunk of people in this country can’t admit that actually, having smart people around is good and we should listen to them.

This was part of our @UCLASustainLA funded project "Heat Resilient LA". Heat already kills more people than any other weather-related phenomenon here in the United States. There is an urgent need for more research and investment in this area. Article link:

How can we keep people safe outdoors in extreme heat? In a paper out today in @naturesustainab we demonstrate that active radiant cooling and visibly-transparent/IR-reflective walls can deliver thermal comfort while also being acceptable to members of heat-vulnerable communities.

To the extent that this archetype is real, the vast vast majority of these people do not end up in PhD programs. You’re more likely to find them at Jane Street, DE Shaw or Meta than a top PhD program. (None of my PhD classmates fit this profile, and no faculty I’ve met do. ).
Most people don't actually know the lengths parents will go to try to raise an academic superstar. In this post, I will detail the life of the average thoroughbred in STEM PhD programs at a top university. The thoroughbred lives a difficult life full of enormous amounts of.
