🇵🇰 | muslim author | up next: IF I LOVED YOU LESS (7/18/24) | published: THE LADY OR THE LION + WHEN A BROWN GIRL FLEES + MY BIG, FAT, DESI WEDDING Anthology
u ever get sad thinking of all the books you’ll never read and art you’ll never see and languages you’ll never be fluent in and places you’ll never visit and history you’ll never learn and food you’ll never taste
having a sister is so weird bc u spend ur whole life as extensions of one another -- consuming the same shows/books/songs, sharing clothes, having the same sense of humor, eating food tg -- and then one of you moves out & everything becomes an obscure reference to what was
authors getting rich off their anti-colonial fantasy/dystopian novels only to post pro-israel shit on their social medias...there is not even a shred of critical thinking. it really is just a cute aesthetic to them.
i keep thinking about how years from now authors will inevitably mine source material from the genocide of the Palestinian people for their little fantasy stories, and they will be called brave for speaking on it, but what will be the point?? if they won't speak up now???
I very much remember growing up with animated shows like Avatar the Last Airbender and “dystopian” Hunger Games books/movies that talked about, occupation, collective punishment, genocide…and seeing how much many people have turned a blind eye to media they once
poc writers don't want publishing to love white authors less, we just want publishing to extend us the SAME opportunities/money/grace/support/resources/affection/etc. that's the point of all this outrage.
and they're both huge authors with insanely successful books and large platforms, so now imagine what's happening behind the scenes with lesser known authors and authors trying to breakout...
it seems that RF Kuang and
@XiranJayZhao
are having their books either disqualified/cens0red—Assumably and allegedly, it may have to do with support of Pal3stine and/or how they speak up about colonialism
go give them and their books some support!
why does going on a Google doc when someone else is on it feel like you've just walked into someone changing, like i'm so sorry for intruding, i'm leaving immediately
how come publishing never wants cute/fun muslim books, why does it always have be abt Trauma and Big Issues and Hating their religion?? can't we just have our silly little stories???
keep in mind that everything we’re seeing online about Palestine is only a FRACTION of the pain, suffering, and destruction going on there. try to conceptualize that. for every heartbreaking story reaching us, there are a dozen more going untold.
i love words and the silent words they carry: when can I see you again? (i hope it is soon.) are you home? (i hope you are safe.) do you love it? (just as i love you?) i dream of you. (do you dream of me?) are you free? (spend time with me!)
marriage of convenience trope is so funny bc the girl is facing some genuine problem and the guy is like "well i guess you could marry me !! haha jk jk...unless??🤔🤔🤔"
I want to write a cozy fantasy romance where they’re enemy gardeners: he’s a grump who grows poisonous vegetation & she’s a sunshine who grows the antidotes
my little cousin went to the book fair and bought two books with a $20 and got $3 in change, and when she got home she said, "mama look! i got two books, and they gave me money, too!!!"
“You have the most beautiful ocean eyes,” he says.
“But my eyes are black,” I reply stupidly. He's the only one who ever got away with making me stupid.
“Exactly. It’s like the ocean at night, dark and glittering with moonlight.”
genuinely cannot fathom the pain of losing more than one family member at once let alone FORTY TWO. imagine ALL of the people gathered together for occasions like holidays or weddings completely wiped out. these numbers aren’t just numbers, they’re PEOPLE.
the "anyone who thinks romance novels have unrealistic plots" tweets are so funny bc they still sound unrealistic!! but are in fact!! very real!!! the unbelievable quality at the basis of love is what makes it so magical
i love words and the silent words they carry: when can I see you again? (i hope it is soon.) are you home? (i hope you are safe.) do you love it? (just as i love you?) i dream of you. (do you dream of me?) are you free? (spend time with me!)
absolutely thrilled to announce my adult rom-com debut!!! ft:

✨perf for fans of ydeo & uzma jalaluddin
whenever I write a good line I’m always scared it’s just an imitation of an already famous line I’ve once read somewhere but completely forgotten about
people saying, “I’m silent bc I’m not an expert on this & am choosing to educate myself !” but you don’t need to be an expert to stand with Palestine against genocide, and 2 seconds of research will unequivocally tell you that.
i keep thinking about the publisher that rejected me bc they "already have a Muslim book" and how many more publishers must pass for that same insidious reason yet never voice it
i feel actually insane watching the most clever thoughtful articulate famous authors i sincerely looked up to for their skill and craft post "all lives matter" posts,, like i genuinely feel insane
@durreasfi
yeah ! like my girl here is a complex human being what makes u think ur good enough for her ?? and ALSO. like, where’s the tension!! the will they, won’t they ?? if he’s just obsessed from page 1 where’s the progress and development ? idgi.
i love book reviews that are like "do NOT read this book, there is something DEEPLY wrong with the author, i wouldn't recommend this even to my WORST enemies.....5/5 stars"
being a writer is going back and forth from "i can do this!" to "i am going to quit." to "i love being a writer!!" to "i hate this." to "i'll make all my dreams come true!!!" to "even trying is futile." to "this was all worth it!!!" endlessly
publishing casual Muslim stories is so important to combat Islamophobia bc then people who've never interacted with Muslims can read those stories and be like oh, they're totally normal & just like me !!!
once again wondering why publishing never wants cute/fun muslim books, why does it always have be abt Trauma and Big Issues and Hating their religion?? can't we just have our silly little stories???
Once Again thinking about how publishing casual Muslim stories helps to combat Islamophobia because then people who have never interacted with Muslims can read those books & see Muslims go through friend/family/romance drama & be like “oh! they’re totally normal, just like me!”

"Mama pours me tea, and it brings tears to my eyes for the second time that night; her cruelty and her kindness both maim me. Her kindness because I can’t hate her, not fully. And her cruelty because I can't love her fully either."
me, finishing a movie: wow that was so good !
the reviews: this was the WORST thing EVER produced, i want to GOURGE my EYES out, i deserve COMPENSATION, film as an art form is DEAD, 0/10
writing is annoying bc i just wrote something clever and will have to wait 3-5 business years for people to appreciate it....WHERE is the instant gratification

✨ A messy family

✨ A loving masjid community
✨ Pakistani-American, Muslim characters
if you’re vaguely “calling for peace” know that peace can only be achieved with the complete liberation of the Palestinian people, not their continued occupation
a masjid auntie telling me she preordered my book and my mom, as a disclaimer, goes “it’s a romance”, auntie goes “and?? that’s also a part of life” SO TRUE AUNTIE
authors & industry professionals: posting a donation link for Gazan children is NOT enough to support Palestine, you need to outright CONDEMN Israel for their genocide of the Palestinian people and call for the complete end of occupation & full liberation of Palestine
referencing historical atrocities in stories is meant to PREVENT such atrocities from occurring again. but people don't want to learn, they don't want to see.
alhamdulillah. THE MAN OR THE MONSTER is out now! my first completed duology!!! thank u to everyone for all the love & support 🥰❤️

it’s so refreshing when an editor loves my book for my writing & not for the representation that can used as a selling point. I constantly feel like I have to sell my identity to get any attention in this industry, but to be recognized for my actual WRITING is just so. nice.
tswift dress lyrics are so halal romance coded, I mean “all of this silence and patience, pining in anticipation” ? “my hands are shaking from holding back from you” ?? “pining and desperately waiting” ???
may Allah protect the Palestinians, give them ease, peace, strength, and solace. it is unfathomable what we're witnessing and i can't even begin to imagine living through what they're experiencing, the pure terror and anguish. ya Khuda.
