The African American Women’s Heritage Course and Manhood Development Program (MDP) have a similar mission: for SFUSD students to develop positive cultural understanding, a deeper sense of identity for young African Americans, and pride in the knowledge of Black history.

Principal Ginny Daws made it her mission to reduce suspensions of African American students at Marina Middle School. When Daws joined the faculty six years ago, the school had issued over a hundred suspensions, which disproportionately targeted African American students.
