Why does this matter?.Even if individual agents appear safe, their group behaviour can diverge in unexpected and misaligned ways. AI alignment cannot stop at the individual level. We need to start looking at AI populations.

What we found:. - LLMs can spontaneously develop shared conventions. - These interactions can create collective biases, invisible at the individual level. - Small committed minorities can flip the group, triggering tipping points.

We started with social conventions—the most basic form of coordination. Using a framework long used to study humans, we studied how populations of LLMs behave when left to interact.
