Border liberalization & immigration increased voting for the far right in Switzerland. This is despite the lack of prominence of traditional predictors associated with anti-immigration, including cultural & econ threats. We suggest a top-down mechanism to explain this finding.
Just published on APSR First View: "The Free Movement of People and the Success of Far-Right Parties: Evidence from Switzerland’s Border Liberalization" by Ala Alrababah (@a_alrababah), Andreas Beerli (@AndiBeerli), Dominik Hangartner, and Dalston Ward.

@AndiBeerli Instead, we provide suggestive evidence consistent with a top-down process using parliamentary bills in Ticino and an implication of Zaller's model of public opinion formation.

@AndiBeerli Despite narratives of overcrowdedness and over-congestion, we don't find an actual effect on an important indicator of density stress--traffic.

@AndiBeerli Interestingly, "density stress" originates from biology to explain the sudden mass mortality of sika deer when they're overpopulated on an island (see here: .But here it was used to mobilize sentiment against #migrants.

@AndiBeerli Instead, we argue that anti-#migrant elites developed novel narratives to mobilize anti-migrant sentiment. In particular, they discussed words such as "Dichtestress" (density stress), heightening fears of overcrowding. We discuss these concerns in detail in the paper.

@AndiBeerli Unlike many recent studies, migration here is not from geographically and culturally distant immigrants or refugees. Instead, it's largely by people living just across the Swiss border to areas just inside the border. We don't find that liberalization increased cultural concerns.

@AndiBeerli What explains these findings? We do not find that border liberalization worsened real or perceived economic outcomes.

@AndiBeerli Border liberalization also increased voting for #FarRright parties in the most affected areas by over 6 percentage points.

@AndiBeerli Border liberalization increased migration from neighboring #Germany, #France, and #Italy by over 10 percentage points.

@AndiBeerli To study this, we examine the effect of border liberalization using a diff-in-diff, comparing regions adjacent to border crossing with areas slightly farther inside #Switzerland
