Welcome Applied Complexity Postdoctoral Fellow Sam Zhang (@_szhang)! Zhang wants to understand the causal mechanisms that drive outcomes — particularly the undesirable ones — in real-world complex social systems. How do the myriad social, institutional, and systemic forces we

Something I thought about on sabbatical is finally seeing the light of day! This new work with @mdahardy @_szhang @jakehofman @dggoldst looks at ways to use models (trained on OOD data & the human's own past judgments) to improve AI-assisted prediction.
🚨New Paper Alert 🚨 How do you train a model to make forecasts about a totally new domain? How about one with no data to train on? Sounds impossible. We propose and tested a way and it worked, well, well! 🎯

Women in academia: More likely to leave, feel pushed out & cite "workplace climate" - as compared to men [using a census of 245k TT faculty in the US] @ScienceAdvances by @thekatiespoon @laberge_nick @hneutr @_szhang @alliecmorgan @baileyfosdick & co https://t.co/3N3Toquoaz
Study (N=7,195) finds compared to men, women have 44% higher odds of being pushed out of academia due to workplace atmosphere than pulled to a better opportunity elsewhere. Even after receiving tenure, women were still at increased risk of leaving. https://t.co/DMNPSJeQjb

Amazing work lead by @thekatiespoon 🤩so important to examine how similar attrition rates can conceal very different gendered mechanisms for attrition

This is just me X'ing into the void (lol) but I think it's wonderful when younger people have higher expectations for what they should expect out of their job/life. Why shouldn't they..? Why should our imaginations be limited by what we've seen before?
I saw a video of a girl that was crying her eyes out b/c she was at a job interview and she asked about getting accommodations for “time-blindness” & the hiring manager was obviously like no, its your responsibility to be into work on time. & I can’t stop thinking about it

A response to the National Public Defense Workload Study: Clients represented by extremely overworked, ineffective defenders are tantamount to clients standing alone. DUC refuses to accept this status quo. We will do everything in our power to change it. https://t.co/VCYEKFVlwq
