I have removed YouTube app from my phone and simply watch it from the browser (mobile). No ads, can play on background, can play while phone is locked.

I simply refuse to pay for YouTube premium. I pay for google cloud storage (wish they had a bundled package - like how an apple subscription gives me music, storage, games and movies). And lately YouTube without premium has simply been unwatchable.
