Knowledge about data-driven #political advertising has no impact on voters' choice to avoid or engage with #ads, despite the use of personal data for targeted political ads. @_sophism_ @solecheler @claesdevreese @SKruikemeier.

7/⚖️ A Threat to Democracy?.Data-driven exclusion can amplify information asymmetry: some citizens receive political ads, while others are (intentionally) left in the dark. Future research is needed to see if this deepens political divides and limits political participation.

6/📉 Budget Trends. From 2021 to 2023, political parties spent less on exclusion strategies. Age and place of residence saw significant decreases, while more sensitive criteria (e.g., migration background) were rarely used for exclusion.

5/🔔 Right-Wing Acceptance.Citizens with right-wing orientations are more accepting of exclusion, particularly based on migration background. This reflects deeper social divides and highlights how exclusion aligns with certain political ideologies.

4/📊 Citizen Reactions.Survey results show that citizens overwhelmingly find exclusion unacceptable, especially when it's based on migration background (80% disapprove). Exclusion based on political views is seen as slightly more tolerable.

3/👥 Who Gets Excluded?.2021 and 2023, political views, age, and location were the most common criteria for exclusion. Parties generally avoided excluding citizens based on migration background or religious beliefs. However, (black-box) custom audience exclusions are on the rise.

2/🔍 The Mechanics of Exclusion.Political parties not only TARGET groups: social media platforms also deliberately allow the EXCLUSION of audiences. From age to gender, to more sensitive criteria like migration background, parties decide who sees their ads and who doesn’t.

🚨New publication w/ @favstats in @CogitatioMaC. 1/🧵Our study explores the (un-)intended consequences of data-driven campaigns during Dutch elections in 2021 and 2023. Using Meta Ad Targeting data, we uncover who is excluded and how citizens feel about it.

5/6 Skepticism among citizens is quite high and informing them about data-driven practices without inducing a sense of resignation seems to be a delicate balancing act. Being too skeptical of data-driven political ads could spill over.

3/6 Some key findings: Participants who used the risk-focused voter guide showed better understanding of data-driven political advertising and were better at identifying highly targeted ads compared to the control group. 🎯.

2/6 The study compared different educational approaches: a gamified interactive condition, a traditional "voter guide," and a control group. Surprisingly, the non-gamified voter guide outperformed the others, especially when highlighting risks. 📊.
