“Can I borrow a shirt?” “Sure. Take whatever you need from my closet.” “Thanks, Lan Zhan,” WWX says. LWJ nods. “Goodnight Wei Wuxian.” “Sweet dreams, Lan Zhan.”

“Wei Ying was.” “Did he say that?” “I could tell,” LWJ says evenly. “I thought you were letting me off the hook today,” WWX says. It was WWX who started it but LWJ doesn’t bother pointing that out. “Go to bed, Wei Wuxian,” he says. “It’s late.”

WWX’s expression doesn’t falter. “How’s the happy family?” “Wei Wuxian,” LWJ says, eyebrows pinching in concern. “Lan Zhan,” WWX says, still smiling. “You can’t possibly tell me they were sad I missed it.”

“I know, I know,” WWX says, making a face. “Coffee is a poor man’s drink.” “That is not what I was going to say.” “No?” WWX grins at him. “Haven’t been around Wei Xin lately?” LWJ puts his cup down. “I saw him today. At the polo game.”

“You say that.” LWJ takes a seat on the adjacent couch. The peppermint tea is fragrant and soothing, and the noise from the busy street below has died down. “Leaf water,” WWX mutters under his breath. “You know—“

LWJ studies him for a moment. He wonders who it is WWX is running from this time. Usually, it’s his mother; other times, Wei Xin. “No smoking,” LWJ finally says with a sigh. “I quit,” WWX replies, blinking innocently at LWJ.

“You have your own apartment,” LWJ says, placing two steaming cups on his centre table. WWX takes one and stares at the contents blankly. “I prefer coffee.” “I know.” WWX sighs. “Can you let it go? Just this once?”

Unbeknownst to LWJ the free time will evade him, as the very same night WWX shows up at his door, looking for a place to crash for a few days.

Soon it’s time to leave. WY intercepts LWJ just before he does though, asking him if he would be free anytime that week. “I’ll let you know,” LWJ says. “Alright,” WY accepts. “Just text me. My number is the same.”

“I don’t doubt it,” WY says. “Nie Huaisang still terrorising local businesses?” “Always.” WY laughs.

LWJ watches him greet LXC with a firm handshake. He assumes they are discussing business. It’s not often that LXC is in town either, with work usually keeping him in Caiyi. “How has it been here?” WY asks. “The usual,” LWJ says. “It hasn’t changed much since you left.”

Wei Xin is a bit different, more detached from his brothers, not only by their ten-year age gap but his role as the patriarch of the family after their father’s passing.

“Me too,” LWJ tells him sincerely. He has known the Wei brothers since they were teens. Wei Xin, the oldest, and the twins: Wei Ying and Wei Wuxian.

“I feel a bit overwhelmed,” he confesses. “I’m sure your family has missed you,” LWJ says. WY’s smile dims a little, but he recovers quickly. “Yeah. I’ve missed them too. And you, Lan Zhan.”

The crowd claps and cheers and WY smiles bashfully at the attention. LWJ claps along, giving WY a small smile when he catches LWJ’s eye. He finds LWJ after the fanfare has died down, handing him a glass of orange juice with a tired smile.

“We are so glad to have Wei Ying back, of course,” she says. “Welcome home, son. It truly hasn’t been the same without you.”

Xiong Lin beams with joy as she addresses the spectators and players gathered at the clubhouse, congratulating individual members of the team, the final one being her own son.

He is saved from answering when WY’s mother directs their attention to the champagne tower, beside which the tournament trophy rests on a designated mount; a precarious position, LWJ notes idly.
