In that sense, the real challenge Carney faces this week is not how to get a deal. But how to not get one.

CUSMA at least protects much of our industry. Or does it? One wonders if Trump, in a fit of pique, might react to resistance by Canada to his tilted offer by imposing a suite of new tariffs on treaty-protected sectors. Along with a big middle finger to those who say it's unlawful.

And that is to not accept an unacceptable deal but without paying the price of revenge tariffs. Easier said than done. Trump is not negotiating. He is assaulting trade partners with a blunt choice: take a shit deal or suffer economic violence. A Trump sandwich.

In watching the fallout from the EU trade deal - now almost universally condemned as a complete surrender to Trump's bullying and even falling into farce as the two sides can't agree to what they agreed to - it seems the goal for Canada this week is crystal clear. .
