For all of my 5 real followers: I’m open for new opportunities as an engineering manager in tech or games, ideally for a tech stack in gameplay, engine, artist tools or graphics. Also open to consulting, career coaching and freelance side gigs. Have 7 YOE, 5 of those at Riot

That being said I am curious what the vibes were like at GDC this year

I am for better or worse a vibes rider. If the vibes are good I’m all in, will hype everyone up, I have endless energy. If the vibes aren’t it it’s hard for me to keep going. I think that’s mainly the reason why I’m so one foot out the door of tech / games these days

Glad I saw Sirat in theaters and doubly glad I brought a friend. Dunno if I could have sat through that solo

How is anyone finding the motivation to work at the end of the world? Asking for a friend

I want to remain hopeful that new tools and technologies does not only amplify the worst of our human tendencies but also the best. That’s not where the money is at the moment, though. And that makes it tough for people w a conscience to want to remain a part of it all.

Call me naive but it seemed the internet could lead to increased empathy. People with little exposure to outside worlds would get their bubbles burst. Instead we’re more polarized. The internet provided new avenues for propaganda, ads and harassment.

The malaise I’ve felt about the tech industry comes from a loss of purpose. At one point it felt like people leading tech companies cared about bettering humanity.

The absolute biggest fucking misunderstanding that the current crop of software elites has is that people want to do stuff. People do not want to do stuff. They don’t want to have to customize things. The don’t want to get things done. And they absolutely. No fixing chance

The only thing we can know for certain with League voice chat is that clips of teenagers shouting slurs are gonna do numbers again for a while

As great as these tools are for unblocking frustrating dev env problems and writing some documentation, they will never replace talking to a principle who’s been in the trenches

Reasoned and well-argued take on AI. My fave part is a comment that points out AI has not and will never solve the human coordination problem that is producing software at scale:

There was that one time a senior exec reached out to my manager to berate one of my directs for being too spicy in a public slack channel. What a great use of time that was for everybody involved!

Watching ppl trash game devs is genuinely horrifying bc these are some of the most chronically underpaid and overworked. As a line manager I saw them doing 80% of the real work while I had no idea what anyone sr director and above were rly doing.

Notably absent in the accountability train are the leaders and investors who green lit this to ship. They get to fail upwards to a new project while the devs get facing the brunt of consumer harassment and unstable paychecks.

The lack of videogame investment has vanished, but also the amount of investment needed has exploded. GTA3 cost like $5 Million. Today anything under $100m is considered “small” for AAA. You gonna see a lot less racing games, or extreme sports, or unusual mid level games. Not

So, 5/6 years ago, there were lots of big investors of all types (publishers, VCs etc) spending big money on AAA studios and projects. Now, there are very, very few big investors spending big money on AAA studios and projects. Those teams that had that investment are now coming

Game devs, I need to believe there are still great teams out there that operate professionally, have fun working together, and have at least 2-3 years runway
