Israel has charged hundreds of Arab citizens with terrorism for social-media posts. I wrote about one extreme case, against a 21 year old college student.

Well, Jessica Pratt has done it again. Love this single from her new album about the dark side of the California dream.

The turning of the tide is upon us, friends. My new album, Here in the Pitch, is out May 3rd, 2024. Many seasons came and went while I built this thing through fear, tears and daydreams. Listen to first song, Life Is. Tour dates and album pre-save here:

A homeless man in SF was found not guilty of beating a former city official after his public defender argued that the city official was in fact a vigilante who preyed on the homeless. I wrote a short dispatch about the verdict. 1/2

FWIW, that sentence isn't intended as snarky. It's a gloss of McDonell's line in Quiet Street about staying in "a combat outpost located within the reassuringly thick walls of the summer palace." My line about class dynamics, too, relies partly on McDonell (Bodies p. 6 e.g.).

The experience McDonell recounts in Quiet Street is the embedded reporting (page 48). But you're right that he reported alongside an Iraqi civil defense unit for "The Bodies in Person," and Bookforum is correcting to clarify this.

Since this is a factual error from @_jessebarron , @bookforum should issue a correction, but even aside from that, US-based reporters probably shouldn’t make snarky asides about how little danger war correspondents experience.

Someone take out their mf checkbook! There’s nothing like Bookforum. It’s where writers write for their friends but in a way that invites everyone. I love my editor Dave O’Neill.
