My sincerest thanks to our amazing team (@J9_Austin, @EMM_GC, @Inglis_Angela) and to @MariaVas_15 and Manraj Randhawa for volunteering on this project! I’m so lucky to get to work with all of you! (9/9).

What we do know is that, on average, psychiatric GC improves empowerment for patients, and that there are no personality dimension or coping style-related subgroups that are obviously at risk for not benefiting from genetic counseling. (8/9).

So, what does this mean? Is GC beneficial to people with different personality traits and coping styles? Are different parts of the appointment more beneficial to certain individuals? We need more work to know for sure! (7/9).

Of course, it’s important to recognize that our smaller sample size may have prevented us from seeing a small effect, but our preliminary data shows no large relationship between these scales and improvement in empowerment after genetic counseling. (6/9).

So, for example, someone with high extraversion may feel more empowered regarding their genetic condition compared to someone with low extraversion, but their extraversion level doesn’t tell us whether they will find GC more or less helpful. (5/9).

Interestingly, we found that personality dimensions/coping styles were related to overall outcome scores, but did not predict the extent of improvement after genetic counseling. (4/9)

We recruited 169 patients from the Adapt clinic @PsychGenetCouns and asked them to complete validated measures of personality and coping style. Genetic counseling outcomes scores were already available from pre- and post-appointment. (3/9).

@J9_Austin @EMM_GC @Inglis_Angela We knew personality dimensions and coping styles could impact mental health treatment, so we were naturally interested in seeing if this was true in genetic counseling as well. This information could help us to improve GC services by identifying those most in need. (2/9).

I’m so excited to share my directed studies work, now published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling! @J9_Austin, @EMM_GC, @Inglis_Angela, and I studied the relationship between personality dimensions/coping styles and GC outcomes: #GCChat (1/9)
