Terry Grace lives with aphantasia and severely deficient autobiographical memory. His mind doesn't hold scenes, faces, or movies.โฃ And yet, he's lived a rich life.โฃ

@_aphantasia I was 40 and a friend brought it up after hearing a news story on it. I love taking pictures and I've heard this from others too. I do see in my dreams and I have decent autobiographical memory. Still learning.

The best part? "There's more science to do," Dr. Spagna says with enthusiasm. Being proven wrong isn't failureโit's progress.

Here's what matters most to Dr. Spagna: "What does aphantasia tell us about consciousness? Human consciousness? That's the real piece." These aren't just different strategiesโthey're fundamentally different ways of BEING conscious.

We may think that because our brains look very similar, then our minds look very similar, and therefore our experiences should be similar. But that is not the case. Aphantasia reveals: Identical brain structures can create radically different conscious experiences.

This raises a HUGE question: If people with aphantasia function perfectly well without visualization... Why do typical visualizers have it at all? Dr. Spagna's hypothesis: It's an evolutionary bonus feature. Helpful, but not fundamental.
