Practical implications: Our research supports environmental crime prevention strategies. ๐ง Homeowners can reduce victimization by minimizing visible signs of valuables. And gun owners should be aware that open advertisement of gun ownership can increase risk of property crime.

Key Finding 2: Criminal proficiency matters! ๐ง Skilled burglars perceive lower risks (less likely to get caught/seen) & higher rewards, increasing their likelihood of committing crimes. This highlights the importance of individual differences. #Criminology #VirtualReality.

Key finding 1: Environmental features significantly influence perceptions of risk & reward in criminal opportunities. ๐ ๐ We found strong empirical support for this theoretical connection using novel methods. #Criminology #VirtualReality.

Excited to share that I have been appointed head of a new Max Planck Partner Group! . We will challenge the assumption that criminal motivation is uniform, researching how different motivations, like having a drug habit vs seeking financial gain, influence target selection.
We are happy to announce the new Max Planck Partner Group โThe Motivated Offender and Criminal Decision-making", led by Patrick McClanahan (@_WPM3_ @UofAlabama) #crime #criminology @maxplanckpress .

While ๐กis effective at reducing fear of crime on average, more research is needed to better understand the optimal conditions. Interventions like ๐, may reduce crime but increase ๐จ. This may inadvertently reduce community engagement and overall well-being. @MPICSL.

In two #VirtualReality experiments, we assessed how changes in the environment influence fear of crime. We find that improved street lighting (๐ก)does not affect fear of crime, while a watching eyes intervention actually (๐) increases fear of crime (๐จ).
