For hip-hop's 50th, I wrote about what how cocky women in rap helped my self esteem in a major way growing up. And spit some of the best words of affirmations I still use to this day.

“I Know That’s Right” was such a labor of love I’m immensely proud of. I hosted, scripted, produced and booked talent. This was the second podcast I hosted and it really made me hungry to do more in the audio space. Open to those opportunities. 👀

For the 100 anniversary of the Tulsa Massacre, I traveled to Oklahoma to tell a truly devastating story that continues to have an impact today. The survivors and descendants continue to fight for reparations.

During the pandemic, there was a reckoning happening among Black journalists. I had the privilege to talk to some of them and cover what was happening at their outlets. I received a special recognition by the Bart Richards Media Criticism committee.

“Existing While Black” was a tough one. We crowdsourced stories of Black people who were harassed by police or had the police called on them while they were doing simple mundane things. This one won NABJ’s 2019 Interactive Feature Award.

This one was really my baby. “We Built This” was our 2019 Black History Month project. It was serious work booking, interviewing and writing the stories for all 18 participants, but it was important for us to highlight the Black history makers of today.

"What’s important is to say how and why does it happen, and that then helps us explain America to itself because the experience of black people is the experience of America."

Through storytelling, I’ve been able to open doors for myself + others that I had only imagined. I’ve been going nonstop since high school + I’m proud of the work I have to show for it. For a young Black girl from Dayton, Ohio w/ no prior media connections, I’ve done alright!.

After 9 years at HuffPost, today is my last day. I’ve grown so much & I’m grateful for the journey. This has been a dream job. Now on to new dreams. I’ll still be writing/hosting/moderating, just doing it as a freelancer for now. Pitch + commission me at taryn@tarynfinley.com.
