How comes the video game industry is worth hundreds of billions of dollars while it isn’t considered a solid career path for techies and artists?

@_RustyRooster Food for thoughts indeed. You are safe if you can make it to the top of the food chain, i.e. studios backed directly by the platform holders, e.g. 343 Industries by Xbox or Naughty dog by Sony. At the opposite side, aka, indies, it's basically starving hoping for a hit one day.

@chel_mour There should be a virtuous consumption of video games aka pirating so called AAA games and buying only when the developers & editors deserve it

@equacc I’m not anticapitalism or anything but these stakeholders find themselves in a lot of places where people are wondering why things are so bad

@_RustyRooster I was a QA at a game studio many years ago. The developers had beds. That should scare you.

@_RustyRooster The same as McDonald's is making billions but most people would not call it a solid career path. Games are expensive to make, a lot of people are making them and there are few cash cows. Supply and demand.

@_RustyRooster It should be the dream job of any techie but seems more like putting your fingers in a vice and squeezing them (or worse appendages)

@_RustyRooster It’s not often not considered a serious career path by us techies due to poor working conditions, excessive overtime(crunch time), unrealistic expectations(sometimes), high stress levels, and limited job security. Because most of them are passionate about it they are underpaid.

@KarlPambou1 Why isn’t there a sane alternative to this since the industry is so lucrative? This is what I don’t understand

@XiebaC1 You’re missing the point, today lots of techies came into tech because of video games and end up in web or other fields because there isn’t enough jobs, while the industry is very lucrative
