I think about this tweet often
Reading about the Russian Civil War for this term paper, and it’s crazy to see how inept the Whites were. Politically naive, strategically completely non-pragmatic, doctrinally rigid, and constantly squabbling. Trotsky has to be one of the best military leaders in history

Marshal of Poland Śmigły-Rydz was also a cadet in this regiment c.1910-1911; it's a pretty famous one cause it was stationed around Vienna.

Some hundred years later, this regiment went through the Brusilov offensive with 26 companies, being reduced to 300 men total by the end of it.

"A Rescript from the High War Council placed particular emphasis on target shooting; the regiment undertook this exercise in June, and the result is remarkable as out of 21,210 shots, there were 1,933 hits and 19,277 misses." Treuenfest. Geschichte des k. k. IR 4. p. 446

I have never met an academic historian who was hostile to people reading primary sources. It’s a core component of undergraduate education in history. Academics ARE concerned when people don’t ever read secondary sources, because, sometimes, not always, reading secondary sources
If you’re confused by the hostility many academics feel towards the laity reading primary sources, understand this is how an “intellectual class” always acts once it’s institutionalized and self-selecting. No different than how the Medieval Church felt about vernacular Bibles.

one of the reasons bavaria and baden-württemberg's border is where it is today is because bavaria's diplomat had too much screentime with bonaparte after austerlitz and basically got to draw the border there according to an anecdote

the transition from "the order of the monarch to count nobilitytitle to form a corps of men from ..." to "this regiment is numbered X and is assigned to this place permanently" is incredibly funny because some units used to be some larp shit before being linearized

anecdote 2: upper rhine kreis (mostly swabian probably) then recruitment to bohemia, got a polish-ukrainian district (stryj) to supplement manpower
the average habsburg regiment: formed in swabia, got destroyed 1690 and reestablished by moravian recruits, from 1781 recruited germans with a supplementary recruiting district of mostly poles; disbanded 1809 and in 1814 reestablished by italians
