I'm in Downtown #LasVegas and just checked into the @PlazaLasVegas . The lobby certainly looks different than it did when they opened back in 1971.

OTD 1948 the Thunderbird Hotel & Casino became the 4th resort on the #LasVegas Strip. At opening the hotel boasted 79 rooms. It became the Silver Bird in 1977, the El Rancho in 1982 and now @fblasvegas

OTD 1987 The Park Hotel & Casino opened in Downtown #LasVegas . It was formally the Holiday International. The hotel would close in 1990 when Bob Snow bought it. It would reopen in 1991 as the first Main Street Station.

Back in the 70s & 80s Labor Day weekend meant one thing in #LasVegas - the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. The Sahara Hotel #Vegas hosted the broadcast starting in 1973. It then moved to Caesars in 1982. Later on South Point hosted it from 2006-11.

OTD 1982 the El Rancho Hotel and Casino opens on the #LasVegas Strip. Ed Torres purchased the shuttered Silverbird Hotel for $25 million and spent another $25m in renovations. It closed in July 1992 and is now the site of @fblasvegas .

OTD 1947 the El Dorado Club opened on Fremont Street Downtown #LasVegas . The casino replaced the SS Rex Club and would remain until 1950. Benny Binion buys the place in 1951 and opened the Horseshoe . 📷s @unlvsc

Ok, I'm an old fart that doesn't have a total grasp of this new-fangled social media stuff. so my #FixVic "thread" came out like a snag. Here's my thoughts in a list to @CityOfLasVegas and @mayoroflasvegas and my friends @VitalVegas and @LasVegasLocally .

@yesco 8/8- Vegas Vic has been representing our City since 1947. His sign has been a fixture on Fremont St. since 1951. Now is the time to start planning and DOING! @CityofLasVegas @MayorofLasVegas It's time to not only #FixVic but #SaveVic!.

@yesco 7/8- Declare the Vegas Vic sign an historical landmark. And trademark the name "Vegas Vic".

@yesco 6/8- Create a major city-wide event for Vegas Vic's 75th birthday May 11. Tie it to the 2026 Helldorado Days weekend May 9-10 (Vic won't mind celebrating a day early).

@yesco @FSELV @LVCVA @CityOfLasVegas 5/8- Start a GoFundMe fundraiser and make it a true civic effort. Perhaps @VitalVegas @LasVegasLocally and other #LasVegas social media accounts spearhead the effort.

@yesco 4/8- Coordinate with @FSELV, @LVCVA,@CityofLasVegas and the Centennial Commission to secure funding for all costs in the renovation of Vegas Vic.

3/8- Contract @YESCO to develop a plan to fully restore Vegas Vic and not the bandaid approach that Schiff the years. Have him say "Howdy Pardner!". maybe wave again?.

2/8- Obtain all rights to the physical Vegas Vic sign from Schiff. @FSELV can absorb all electrical power costs. @FSELV and @NeonMuseum can share in maintaining Vic going forward.

1/8- Secure the trademark rights from Archon Corporation (Lowden Family) for the full body art that represents Vegas Vic. Certainly the Lowden's recognize the history as they've been a part of our City for decades.

It's obvious fines, etc. is not motivating Schiff to maintain Vegas Vic. It's up to @CityofLasVegas and @mayoroflasvegas to take action to protect and maintain an iconic symbol of our City. A thread 🧵-.
