This is the best definition I found till now.
Slop is probably one of the most important & rich concepts for understanding modernity; slop is: .1) efficient .2) mass produced (low cost) .3) done carelessly, thrown together without fussing over the details .4) ahistorical; not rooted in tradition or practice.

This piece by Zweig, even if a bit luddist, feels incredibly modern. Chat-LLMs fit precisely in what he's criticizing: the monotization of the world, the nullification of effort in most of the things that used to be mentally stimulating.

I don't necessarily agree with his anti-americanism btw. But how he describes the way we avoid effort and how everything feels the same, is a good description on where the current use of LLMs is bringing us imo. And I am guilty of it as well 🙃.
