As 2022 comes to a close, it brings to an end the 50th anniversary year of the publication of my debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, which introduced the world to Rambo. Hard to believe it’s been half a century. I’m thrilled that the book has never been out of print.
Thanks. I devoted 3 years to writing my novel FIRST BLOOD. Almost quit a couple of times. Makes me smile that after 5 decades it's never been out of print.
The film adaption of my 2005 novel CREEPERS, about 8 harrowing hours in a long-abandoned hotel, is making its way to the big screen. Filming is complete and the post-production editorial/music score process is underway. The storyboards look terrific.
I’m amazed that my debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, was published 51 years ago and has never been out of print. The OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY cites FIRST BLOOD as the source for the creation of a new word: Rambo.
Not many people know that I named the hero of my debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, after an apple. My wife brought home some Rambo apples she purchased at a roadside stand while I was working on coming up with a name.
Rambo fans may be surprised to learn that my novel FIRST BLOOD—which introduced the character—has more action than the film. The ending is surprisingly different from that of the movie. My website has lots of info—essays, photos, rare movie posters & more.
Here's a rare movie poster of FIRST BLOOD. Not many people know that Kirk Douglas was originally cast as Colonel Trautman. He quit just as filming began and was replaced by Richard Crenna. My website has lots of details about Rambo, my novel, and the film.
Before you see the new movie, read the book that introduced Rambo to the world. My novel, FIRST BLOOD, published in 1972, has never been out of print. When I wrote this, I had no idea how far
#Rambo
would go.

RAMBO IV had overlong action scenes, but the director's cut has excellent dialogue and understands the character. "Wars. Old men start them. Young men fight them. Nobody wins."
My 1st novel FIRST BLOOD was published in 1972. It's never been out of print. The ending is different from that of the movie. The novel also has more action than the movie. This edition includes an intro & afterword explaining how I came to write the book.
36 years ago today, the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD debuted. Broke box office records. Prompted the studio to make sequels, one of which is shooting now. On Nov 13, a 4-K video version will be released with new extras. A new print edition is out. I could never have imagined.
FIRST BLOOD, my debut novel published in 1972, took me to some far-flung locations where the Rambo movies were filmed. Here’s a photo of me and Sylvester Stallone in 1987 in Yuma AZ. View more photos on my website.
38 years ago this past October weekend, in 1982, the film adaptation of my novel FIRST BLOOD debuted in theaters. Sly is great in the role. Excellent eyes, which is the secret to movie acting. Happy to say my novel has never been out of print.
Nice review for the 4K of the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD. Good perspective on the other films. Alas, the reviewer says it’s a little-known novel. Sigh. The summary of the extras says nice things about my audio commentary.
Here’s a holiday tradition we should import to the U.S.: In Iceland, books are exchanged on Christmas Eve and everyone spends the rest of the night reading and eating chocolate.
In my office I recently found eight
@StephenKing
typescripts (IT, MISERY, THE DARK HALF etc.) that he sent me in the 1980s. I forgot I had them. They're going to be auctioned to help children's cancer research.
Another great talent is no longer with us. Max von Sydow. A brilliant actor who appeared in many classics. A film that the obituaries didn’t mention is one of my favorites--Sydney Pollack’s THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR.
The coronavirus has turned us all into dogs. We roam the house all day looking for food. We're told "no" if we get too close to strangers, and we get really excited about car rides!
I'm working away in my office on the Western novel I've been writing for two years. It's my New Year's resolution to finally finish it. During this time of chaos, I am grateful to be time-traveling to the 1800s.
Oct. 22 was the 41st anniversary of the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD debuting in theaters. I recall entering a theater at the last moment & sitting in the back—if the audience hated it I could run. Fortunately they didn’t. My audio commentary on home-video discs has lots of info.
Because this is the 50th anniversary of my novel FIRST BLOOD (still in print), I was sorting through some photographs and found this one from 1988. It was used in a profile of me in People magazine. That’s a theater standee in the background.
A major documentary about Sylvester Stallone, SLY, is now showing on Netflix. I’m thrilled that one of my favorite directors, Quentin Tarantino, mentions me and my novel FIRST BLOOD, which became the first of the Rambo films.
Here’s a photo of me and Sylvester Stallone taken on the set of RAMBO III. I liked it so much, I used it on my business cards. Over the years, we’ve had many conversations. He’s as smart as he is humorous.
It's weird to be writing a book during the pandemic. I'm more than 62,000 words into my novel about the American West and I'm not sure when I'll finish. The publishing world is contracting because of the virus, so speed doesn't matter. Here's a photo of my writing lair.
Stephen King sent me copies of typescripts of his novels in progress during the '80s. They'll be auctioned to benefit a children's cancer research fund in the name of my son Matthew and granddaughter Natalie, both of whom died from a rare bone cancer. Each copy is signed & dated.
I've been working at my desk every day during the pandemic, writing my American Western novel, which now has topped 62,000 words. Here's a photo of the room where it happens.
I’m often asked if I like the movie version of my novel, FIRST BLOOD. Movies and books are different. Changes are inevitable. But it’s a terrific movie that seems more realistic each year because its action scenes don’t use computer effects. The realism of the stunts is amazing.
The auction of Stephen King items my family donated is mostly completed—$51,000 went to U of Iowa Foundation's Matt Morrell/Natalie Sanchez Pediatric Cancer Research Fund. Matt was our son. Natalie was our granddaughter, the daughter of our daughter, Sarie. Thanks to all who bid.
My thanks to Jack Carr for his generous comments about my novels. I'm a fan of Jack's books also. “There were thrillers before THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE and then there were thrillers after. It stands as one of the best thrillers ever written.” –Jack Carr

In this time of New Year resolutions, mine is to finally finish the Western novel I've been writing for 2 years. There's hardly a hot market for Westerns but I've never written for the market. During this time of chaos I'm time-traveling to the 1800s—writing the book for myself.
My thanks to
@JackCarrUSA
for his generous comment about one of my novels. I'm a fan of Jack's books also.

Looking forward to reading my friend
@StephenKing
's new thriller, HOLLY, which brings back P.I. Holly Gibney, who uncovers a dark secret between two retired professors. He and I once took a road trip together.
The movie version of my novel CREEPERS, about 8 harrowing hours in a long-abandoned hotel, will be released in 2024. The storyboards look perfect. Filming is complete and the post-production editorial process is moving forward.
Thrilled to hear Quentin Tarantino would like to remake FIRST BLOOD. In a recent interview, he says he would cast Adam Driver as Rambo and Kurt Russell as the sheriff. I’m a QT fan. Delighted by the nice things he says about my novel.
Mark your calendars for the late-May auction of Stephen King typescripts he sent me in the 1980s, including IT, MISERY, and the never finished screenplay for THE NIGHTFLIER. The auction will benefit the Matt Morrell and Natalie Sanchez pediatric cancer research fund.

My novel FIRST BLOOD has been translated into 30 languages. I could never have predicted during my 3 years of writing the novel and sometimes stopping. Here's a collage of some of the covers.
When I published my novel FIRST BLOOD in 1972, I couldn’t have imagined that jokes about Rambo and Thanksgiving would be on the internet in 2022. “Nothing is over.”
My novel FIRST BLOOD is set in KY. The film's set in the Pacific NW. "His name was Rambo, and he was just some nothing kid for all anybody knew, standing by the pump of a gas station at the outskirts of Madison, Kentucky." My blu-ray audio commentary discusses other differences.
Looking forward to seeing my bestselling author friend
@JackCarrUSA
's exciting novel TERMINAL LIST released as a limited series drama on Amazon Prime video on July 1. His latest novel IN THE BLOOD will soon be available.
Saddened by the death of distinguished actor Brian Dennehy, who played the police chief in the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD. Age 81, natural causes. Here's the Deadline Hollywood obituary.
Next Sunday’s Super Bowl takes me back to the 1989 Super Bowl, after which the 4-hour mini-series of my novel BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE was broadcast. It remains the only mini-series to have that distinction.
On Memorial Day weekend, 35 years ago in 1985, RAMBO (FIRST BLOOD PART II) opened in theaters. It's the sequel to the film based on my novel FIRST BLOOD. While the first film was a hit, the sequel was even more so. Here's one of the posters.
Hard to believe that next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of my debut novel, FIRST BLOOD. Thriller writer John D. MacDonald called it, “One hell of a hard, fast novel.”
FIRST BLOOD, my first novel, has more action than the film & explores Rambo's police-chief antagonist—a hero from the Korean War—to the point that many book reviewers thought the police chief was the main character. This edition has my intro about how the book came to be written.
I recently found this 1987 photo of me with Sylvester Stallone on the set of RAMBO III. No need for 1,000 versions back then. My novelization expanded the plot and explored the theme that Afghanistan was Russia’s Vietnam. Available as an e- & audio book.
There are always differences between a novel and a movie. On home-video discs of the film of my novel FIRST BLOOD, I have an audio commentary that compares them. The two have differences, but
I admire the film for succeeding on its own terms. It changed the action-movie genre.
Because this is the 50th anniversary of my novel FIRST BLOOD (still in print), I was sorting through some photographs and found this one from 1988. It was used in a profile of me in People magazine. That’s a theater standee in the background.
You could call this 1988 photo “Rambo on My Mind.” It was taken for a profile of me in People magazine, with a theater standee in the background. Hard to believe it's been 51 years since my debut novel FIRST BLOOD introduced Rambo and it's never been out of print.
Jack Carr's new thriller, IN THE BLOOD, has just been released. His first novel, THE TERMINAL LIST, will be a limited series (streaming) in July. With Chris Pratt.
If you haven't yet seen Quentin Tarantino's brilliant new film, ONCE UPON A TIME... IN HOLLYWOOD, I highly recommend you do. It's wacky and unpredictable, a movie-movie that celebrates movies. I’ve seen it 3 times.
#OnceUponATimeInHollywood
Since my debut novel was published in 1972, it's been translated into 30 languages, many of which are represented here. See if you can guess which cover is the original...
My author friend
@JackCarrUSA
not only writes terrific thrillers but also smart ones. His newest IN THE BLOOD arrives next week, a month before the streaming series of his wonderful first novel, THE TERMINAL LIST. I’m a fan.
This has been circulating through the internet. I can't resist posting it. As someone said, it looks like
#Rambo
invented the $20 bill. The guy gets around. When I spent 3 years writing my novel FIRST BLOOD 47 years ago, I could never have imagined. And a new film debuts in Sept.
Congrats to my bestselling author friend
@JackCarrUSA
, whose exciting novel TERMINAL LIST will be released as a limited series drama on Amazon Prime video on July 1.
Rambo turns 50 this year, and I can't believe it's been that long since the publication of my debut novel, FIRST BLOOD, introduced him. It's never been out of print.
When
@StephenKing
taught creative writing at the University of Maine, my debut novel FIRST BLOOD was one of the two texts he used. The other was James M. Cain’s DOUBLE INDEMNITY. Here's a photo of us in Atlantic City in 1983.

To research my novels, I trained in firearms, defensive/offensive driving, piloting an airplane, and other action skills. For the outdoor scenes in TESTAMENT, I took a wilderness-survival course from NOLS and spent five weeks in Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains.
My son Matthew died from the complications of bone cancer. In this memoir, I tell his story & the story of my family's reaction to losing him. Of all my books, this one's had the most response, mainly from parents who lost children & found my comments about panic attacks helpful.
Congrats to my author friend
@JackCarrUSA
, whose thrillers are both terrific and smart. His newest IN THE BLOOD was published in May and the streaming series of his first novel, THE TERMINAL LIST, was the
#1
television series on Prime Video.
My novel FIRST BLOOD will be re-issued in a new Ukrainian edition. When the novel was published 49 years, I couldn’t have imagined its endurance. So far, it’s been published in 30 languages.
In case you missed it, Jack Carr and I had a great conversation for his DANGER CLOSE podcast. He's a terrific thriller author, one of my favorites. We discussed our work, especially the 50th anniversary of FIRST BLOOD. Here's the video link:
@JosephRMeyer
Any Rambo characterization in the film is based on what you bring to it, not what's on the screen. He could have been called John Smith. Check 1976's TRACKDOWN, a grindhouse exploitation film with the same plot.
My heart goes out to authors whose books are being released during this unprecedented emergency. It’s difficult to travel and promote what they worked so hard to create. Please support them. Now, more than ever, books provide the best in-depth, many hours of escape.
Fans of my novel FIRST BLOOD and the film adaptation might enjoy my audio commentary for the blu ray of the film. It’s rare that an author is asked to comment on an adaptation. Lots of background details.
As research, I’ve been trained in firearms, hostage negotiation, flying and other action skills that I describe in my novels. For TESTAMENT's outdoor scenes, I took a wilderness-survival course from NOLS and spent 5 weeks in Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains.
A recent poll found that most Americans read maybe 13 books a year. I suspect that’s an overestimate. My life is fuller because of books. A teacher of mine once said that we spend all day putting words out of our head & at the end of the day we should read and put words back in.
Quentin Tarantino—one of my fave directors—said in 2022 if he ever did a remake, it'd be my novel FIRST BLOOD. But he said he doesn’t do remakes. His new project THE MOVIE CRITIC will be something else. Not surprised. Hooray that there’ll be a new QT film.
My novel FIRST BLOOD (in which Rambo first appeared) was published 50 years ago. Never could have predicted that the book would remain in print after a half century. Here are some of the many covers over the years.
