Although these initial moments are understandably peripheral in many HRI papers or datasets (which rarely describe or record them), we suggest they can be consequential on the treatment of the robot as an agent, and should be thought about as an integral part of the experiments.

From an experiment which recorded these initial moments, we attempt to describe through which micro-interactional processes a Pepper robot emerged as a "greetable" social agent. That is, how participants started to treat the robot as something else than an inanimate object.

The paper deals with the first seconds of co-presence with a robot, i.e. the fleeting instants after participants encounter a robot for the first time in natural or laboratory settings.
