Our final presenter is Rachael Nelson! She will analyze the display of a red-figure Attic ware stamnos at the MFA, Boston. She calls into question the one dimensionality of single-culture attribution and highlights complexities of dealing with intercultural objects.

Artist Joe Cimino is one of our symposium presenters! Cimino’s presentation discusses his project, Leviathan, partially inspired by Moby Dick, and explores the material history of oil and resources harvested from animals during the Industrial Revolution, and its modern legacy.

Next in our symposium lineup is Luli Zou. Utilizing a variety of scientific tools and historical research, Zou will discuss Sylvester Manor’s Canton black lacquer box and confirm its provenance, offering further knowledge on export lacquerware

Our first symposium emerging scholar is Damián Sabatini! Drawing on his research at 2 London Astronomical societies, he argues that the objecthood of pictures – understood from a material culture perspective – plays a key role in shaping people's relationship with the universe.
