Starmer regrets "an island of strangers". When we @Ipsos_in_the_UK took a snapshot of community cohesion last year, we found Brits seem to get on with their neighbours. And if anything, community cohesion is stronger in places with more immigrants.
I’ve written this essay for The Observer on Keir Starmer’s first year as PM, the very private side to him that you don’t often see in public, and how he has learnt from the mistakes he has made.

The turmoil around #welfare in the Labour Party is reflective of public views on this. We spoke about the benefits paradox in March, the public wants both compassion & individual responsibility, don't clearly land one side or the other. Will the ongoing debate have changed views?
Number of MPs backing the welfare amendment still rising this morning - this really is a very serious crisis for the government. Politically, it’s hard to see how the government can proceed as planned. Fiscally, it’s hard to see how they can’t. Something will have to give.
