Ms. Berlyn Tut is the 2025 recipient of the Sharon Matola Conservation Scholarship. She will receive an academic award of BZ$10,000.00 towards her pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management at the University of Belize starting in August 2025.

The Belize Zoo and Tropical Education Center is mourning the loss of Lindo the Jaguar, following a prolonged battle with chronic renal failure (kidney disease) and the increasing challenges of old age. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who were touched by his presence.

Grace is a herbivore. Now that her teeth are in, she’s munching on a mix of fruits and leafy greens. We’re still trying to figure out why she enjoys nibbling on our staff… does she think that zookeepers are a delicacy or they’re just oversized, walking veggies in uniform?

Happy Tuesday from our not-so-little Grace the tapir!.As tapir calves grow, their signature spots and stripes gradually fade and their coats transition to a sleek dark grey. Grace still has a few more months to show off her coat so be sure to stop by her habitat before it’s gone!

456 Belizeans walked through our gate to celebrate Sharon Matola Day. We honored the woman whose wild dream gave us a place to connect with wildlife. Her life work was about connecting animals, people, and the wild spaces we share. Thank you, Belize, for keeping her legacy alive!

2 years ago, we debuted Neo the river otter’s habitat at the 2nd Annual Sharon Matola Day!. Neo has become one of our most popular animal. While he may not have an otter companion, Neo receives daily care, and attention from our team and of lots of love from visitors like you!

The Belize Zoo is the greatest part of Sharon Matola’s legacy. With this in mind, we invite anyone who is planning to visit the Zoo on Sharon Matola Day (June 7th) to create a piece of art, such as a small poster or painting, that illustrates what The Belize Zoo means to you.
