Bassam brought in a Syrian refugee they had helped get settled & a q. posed was how it had felt getting herself & her young children over to the UK in a dingy. She said she didn’t feel much, because by that point, after what they had endured, she was already dead inside.*

At some stage, the Home Office reduced the amount of days to a hostile 7 days.

Once provided with Refugee Status, people have to leave their temporary accommodation within 28 days. That means they have to get set up with a bank account, national insurance, a job, universal credit & housing. The risk of homelessness is incredibly high.

There are 36.7 million refugees worldwide. The UK is home to approximately 1%. Developing countries are host to the majority of refugees (and many of these countries aren’t actually safer than their home country).

Did you know, while asylum seekers wait for a decision on their claim, they are given as little as £9.50 a week to live off of? The maximum is £37.75. They are not permitted to work. Can you imagine trying to live off of that?

During the rehearsal process for #TheBoyattheBackoftheClass, we had Bassam from Refugee Action Kingston and Becca & Eliza from JUMP in to chat with us about some realities faced by asylum seekers and refugees. A THREAD:
