I found that comment, as well intentioned as it was, so ineffectual. It’s an impossibility for me to let go. If anything I treasure the memories of my mother more than anything. And yes, I guess, if pain accompanies some of those memories, than I embrace the pain too.

She’d say don’t worry about me, “you’ve got your own problems.” I tuoi figli- she’d say in Italian - “your kids”- she’d remind me. A few years ago, someone said to me, it’s time to let go and let the dead rest in peace.

I miss her dearly, especially today - her birthday, and when so much is wrong with our planet. She was always able to comfort me and ground me. If she was alive right now she’d tell me to focus on what’s most important.

Everyone grieves and deals with loss in their own way. It’s been thirteen years since my mom passed away. I thought, with time, the pain would erode but actually the opposite is true. If anything I miss her more and the pain I experienced when she passed away is just as strong.

It may not matter to a lot of people but personally I think it should.

I’m generalizing, of course, but consider this: if you’re buying cheap food at a restaurant or a food truck, why is it so cheap? What’s the cost behind it? Is the business using sub-par ingredients? Are they paying their workers fairly? Providing a safe work environment?

Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible.

The key is learning to handle the curve balls life throws at you and solving problems. If you can learn to handle and solve problems you have a chance at being content.
