Really loving this weekly dose of learning! Dr. Peterkin makes the treatment of AUD super accessible - very needed given that only around 2% of patients with AUD are currently receiving treatment!!!.

So so proud of @drkerrymeltzer for sharing this with the world - growing around our grief, appreciating the joy and beauty surrounding us and recognizing the profound size of our collective and individual loss ❤️ thank you for these words.

I started trying to put my grief into words shortly after Maeve & Gideon died. It was hard to write, but it was also cathartic. I hope it resonates with some. 1/1.

There is still much to be done and larger systems are at play here but hoping that this work adds to the conversations and highlights the important role medical students can play and the impact segregated care has on our medical training, but most importantly our patients 5/.

Our conclusions were that: 1) experiences of segregated care during third year were wide spread 2) this has an impact on education - contributing to cynicism and burnout and 3) we used the results for institutional advocacy and saw and continue to see incremental changes 4/.

We know that this is bad for patients but there has been less work done around the impact that training in this system has on students - we created a survey to try to understand the impacts of segregated care on our 3rd year medical students during their clinical rotations 3/.

This work is the result of a decade almost of incredible student organizing and advocacy and at ISMMS - our healthcare system, and especially AMCs, are segregated - often on the basis of insurance but in many places that is a proxy for racial segregation. 2/.

I still can’t quite believe it is real since it’s been years and years in the making and endless hours of work on so many peoples parts but our paper detailing the work we have done/folks are doing around segregated care is finally out in the world! 1/

I am so thankful for the tremendous amount of mentorship I gained through this project from the always inspiring @rachaelbedard, @RossMacDonaldMD and many others at NYC H+H- particularly our co-author and friend, Fatos Kaba, who died before seeing this project to its completion.
