If you haven't been paying attention, Trump has now undone every rule the Obama administration put in place to protect transgender people from discrimination:
Ben Shapiro: "It's just an aspect of a free speech culture that if somebody's flying a Confederate flag you probably shouldn't make the assumption that they're a baseline rote racist"
NEW: When Robert Pape studied those arrested at the Capitol, he thought he'd find they were driven by economic anxiety.
Instead, he found they came from places where residents were worried about immigrants and minorities taking over from white people.
I wonder how many of the people stuck on I-95 supported the confirmation of Justice Gorsuch, who ruled a trucker should have stayed with his broken down unheated truck and frozen to death rather than seek safety.
Whatever the final outcome, my heart is broken to see this many people willing to vote for Trump after the atrocities we've witnessed for the past four years.
Why is it so hard to understand that if your job pays less than unemployment benefits, the problem *isn't* the unemployment benefits?
The whole point of unemployment benefits is to be just enough to keep you afloat until you can find a livable wage, not one just as low.
Listen, if you're more concerned about the drag queens reading to kids than you are the Nazis protesting outside, you're... on the side of the Nazis.
That's how that works.
Also, the apparent surge in young people identifying as trans directly reflects the "surge" we saw in left-handedness in the early 20th Century. It turns out, when something is less stigmatized, fewer people try to hide it!
@JuliaSerano
has explained:
So the praying coach lied about being fired, and now that the Court has ordered the school reinstate him, he's too busy being a conservative celebrity to return to his job. Everything about this case has been rife with the most unChristian duplicity.
It's not unheard of for an elementary school teacher to discuss the existence of her spouse, but apparently if she discusses her WIFE, it's a "disruption" to a Texas education -
I usually don't wade too deep into gay Twitter, but what's happening with the gaysovercovid insta, the Puerto Vallarta and other NYE circuit parties, and the "gay civil war" unfolding as a result is hella interesting, so here's a quick explainer thread with some thoughts. 1/x
I'm an atheist. I don't pray. Not even on the "National Day of Prayer." Not ever.
Many people don't pray. Many people don't believe in prayer. A National Day of Prayer erases and stigmatizes many of us.
But we are here, and we will keep fighting for freedom FROM religion.
Well, I guess I don't like like Eddie Redmayne anymore. Agreeing to play a trans character wasn't great in the first place, but defending J.K. Rowling? Someone cares more about his Fantastic Beasts career than the trans friends he claims to have:
Funny, she heard from and listened to a lot of people — none of them trans women!
So much derp in here, but let's start with: THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS RAPID-ONSET GENDER DYSPHORIA.
Also, it's a complete MYTH that 60-90% of trans kids desist. It's just not true!
@jk_rowling
has apparently got sucked into every anti-trans falsehood.
This is very bad for religious freedom. No taxpayer should have to pay for someone else's religious education, let alone subsidize institutions that discriminate against LGBTQ people, people with disabilities, or others.
The Supreme Court's fourth decision is Carson v. Makin. This is a big one. In a 6–3 opinion by Roberts, the court holds that Maine violated the free exercise clause by refusing to provide public funding to private religious schools.
And just like that, the Trump administration defines sex as defined by biology and wipes out health care discrimination protections for all trans people in the US.
What a horrible tragedy as another shooting targeted an LGBTQ club. I understand connecting to Pulse, but if you're not mentioning all the Proud Boy protests at drag shows and bomb threats to trans-affirming hospitals, you're missing important context.
"If a hitman is hired and he kills somebody, the hitman goes to jail. But not only does the hitman go to jail, but the person who hired them does. There was an attack carried out on January 6, and a hitman sent them. I want you to get to the bottom of that."
Officer Dunn: "Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger are being lauded as courageous heroes. And while I agree with that notion, why? Because they told the truth? Why is telling the truth hard? I guess in this America, it is."
It took, what, two, three days of Gamestop chaos for the wealthy and powerful to literally shut down everyone else's ability to buy stocks freely?
The grift of the "free market" dissolved very quickly when just a little pressure was applied. We can't go back to normal.
A black trans woman has taken over the mic, noting the absence of black trans people at the
#EqualityTownHall
tonight. My guess she is responding to the conspicuous removal of
@AshleeMPreston
:
I’m pulling out of the lgbtq presidential town hall tonight. I was part of the program & CNN scrapped my participation last minute. I was going to bring attention to the terror TSA inflicts on trans & non-binary bodies while traveling. I’d rather be absent than present & silent.
Did Trump just claim "there aren't 100 million people with preexisting conditions"? That's true, it's at least 135 million, plus at least 7 million more who've had COVID-19.
#Debates2020
I simply do not understand how people can look at this and think it's good for our country to be treating people this way.
Of course, the people who support such actions aren't actually looking.
With nothing but the clothes on his back and less than $300 in his pocket, this 'pillar of the community' was put on a plane and deported to Jordan after living in the United States for nearly 40 years
A lot of people are readily quick to pile on
@IlhanMN
, but why aren't the same people clamoring for an apology from
@Jim_Jordan
over his blatant anti-Semitism? The silence is deafening, the double standard obvious:
I've been boosted since Thanksgiving and I just tested positive for COVID on an at-home test.
My symptoms are mild, but Omicron is clearly no joke.
Whatever your most cautious behavior looked like over the past 21 months, go back to that.
Blatant misgendering from the Trump campaign of one of Pennsylvania's top health officials. There's no place for this kind of transphobia in 21st Century society.
The Sean Hannity Radio Show so far:
Background rock music.
SILENCE.
More music.
Clip of Trump/Hannity show promo.
Another Hannity show promo.
Clip of Comey interview.
So far, Hannity has not yet spoken.
I really tried. But when you claim to value science then insist on espousing a premise that fails on its face, I don't know what to call that except prejudice. If you don't want to be called a bigot, you can't be sharing harmful misinformation. You can't have it both ways.
DC Police start wildly shoving protesters. This behavior gets a protester a felony charge. Based on aggressive crowding all night, this wild MPD behavior was entirely predictable.
#DCProtests
I see a lot of folks are upset with Harry Styles today, and it seems both the women and the men envy just how fabulous he looks in those dresses. Jealousy is not attractive on y'all!
Republicans were so excited for Dobbs to send abortion back to the states, but now that states are acting to protect access to abortion, they oppose such democratic efforts. It's because they don't care about democracy or anybody's rights; just about winning.
There are some days when I think Michelle Obama's "when they go low, we go high" advice is some of the worst guidance the political left could have ever received or embraced.
Alabama Public Television refused to air a kids' show because it portrayed a same-sex wedding. It's hard to take people seriously when they complain that everyone in Alabama gets lumped into certain stereotypes.
Let's be clear: Trump just used the exact same talking points that J.K. Rowling was spouting the other day to justify taking health care protections away from trans people.
I think it's reasonable to hold people accountable for needlessly endangering others, but perhaps especially when their capital is attention, admiration, and popularity. Maybe being hot shouldn't give you a pass to be a shitty human? That seems like a fair proposition. 25/x
There could not be a clearer example of blaming Democrats for Republican obstruction.
They say no to everything, why can't he get them to say yes? Listen to yourself
@chucktodd
Former McConnell staffer openly admits he thinks businesses should literally be punished for deciding not to associate in a free market with freewheeling hate and disinformation.
For those still tentative about using the word "fascism," how much more blatant must they be?
This is a helpful list of brands who are begging to sit in front of a House panel next year to discuss their company’s participation in leftist corporate extortion.
2nd Epilogue: I can't help but notice a trend among those directly criticizing my thread: conservative political sympathy.
There are layers of privilege, conspiratorial thinking, and political perspective intersecting with all of this. So much more to unpack! 28/26
"Here's the bad part: When you do testing to that extent, you're gonna find more people, you're gonna find more cases. So I said to my people, 'slow the testing down please!'" -- Trump
To spell it out even more: If a transgender person walked into a hospital with a broken arm and a doctor refused to care for them because they're trans — or otherwise mistreated them — the Trump administration would defend the doctor's right to discriminate.
I'm pleased to share this op-ed about my experience as an adoptee and as an advocate for abortion access. Too often, I feel involuntarily conscripted into the wrong side of the debate by those who feel adoption is a preferable alternative to abortion. I do not agree. 1/x
"My birth mother's choice to put me up for adoption can only be meaningful if she had a choice between adoption and abortion in the first place," writes
@ZackFord
.
The Electoral College is already rigged in their favor, but they want to rig it even more.
They've made it harder to vote, gerrymandered themselves control of state legislators, and enjoy a massive advantage in the Senate due to malapportionment. But they still want more.
“If Republicans don’t challenge and change the U.S. election system, there will never be another Republican president elected again. President Trump should not concede.”
This is the man SC elected over
@harrisonjaime
. Just disgraceful.
Republicans are just constantly making up fake rules to defend themselves and attack Democrats. These bizarre goalpost moves convince no one yet for some reason the media lets them get away with being smug bullshitters.
Susan Collins says she's more concerned about Biden announcing he'll pick a Black woman than Trump announcing he'd pick a woman because Biden made his announcement when he was a candidate & therefore politicized the process. (Remember Trump's ACB superspreader event at the WH?)
"I couldn't get it done."
@PeteButtigieg
displays great humility as he explains the way he wishes he could end police-involved violence against black people.

It's not that I'm surprised, but it's still incredible that this happened and that accountability will likely be minimal despite the obvious cost in lives.
Trump appointees in the Health and Human Services department last year privately touted their efforts to block or alter scientists' reports on COVID to more closely align with Trump's messages about the virus, according to newly released documents.
JFC does the
@nytimes
just have a list of anti-trans talking points that it just goes through one by one and turns into articles? It's not an exaggeration that this article is literally a puff pieces for transphobic parents.
I saw a high school friend post yesterday that it was her son's "spiritual birthday," explaining: "He asked Jesus into his heart a year ago tonight."
He's in kindergarten.
Kind of puts all the anti-LGBTQ "grooming" rhetoric into perspective, huh?
Could anyone better reinforce my point than someone with a shirtless selfie and no last name defending people "living their best lives" and fat-shaming me? According to his posts, he agrees with Trump that "the 'remedy' is worse than the disease." Ok! 27/26
Conservatives: Queer people shouldn't be allowed to exist. Erase anything affirming them and make life as difficult as possible for them.
LGBTQ+ folks: Just let us be who we are without discriminating against us for it?
Media: "Clash." "Feud." "Disagreement." "Controversy."
Just got a New York Times push alert telling me how Disney is "feuding with Florida" over the Don't Say Gay bill. A classic and typical example of the media once again misrepresenting & both-sidesing a bad-faith, cynical, partisan attack on a person or company by the right.
A perfect example of how conservatives auto-hate anything a Democratic administration. The White House is literally full of CHRISTMAS trees and some talented dancers are doing a fun tap interpretation of The Nutcracker (a traditional Christmas ballet), but they must hate it!
On Monday, the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in a case called
#303Creative
, an effort by
@ADFLegal
to overturn laws protecting LGBTQ people from discrimination.
I have a very important rule of thumb for you as you hear any of the discourse around this case... 🧵
Reminder: Before today, you could still be *legally* fired just for your sexual orientation or gender identity in HALF the states.
That is no longer the case.
"Dear Parents,
Next month, we'll be discussing the departments that make up the Executive Branch. Given the Secretary of Transportation is a gay man, the law requires we give you this notice and invite you to opt your child out of the lesson."
No joke, that's the bill.
The bill requires parents to be warned 30 days in advance if an LGBT person/subject will be even mentioned in a Tennessee classroom, and allowed to opt-out their children.
"Confusion is the point. Fear is the point. Letting people know that their bodies are subject to the whims of random male judges and shadowy religious organizations is the point."
It's tragic how long Schock faced internal rejection and that he still faces family rejection.
It's unfortunate he uses this to shore up his partisan bonafides.
It's disappointing he stops short of an apology for the harm he has caused LGBTQ people.
Sen.
@JohnCornyn
is complaining that Democrats might make DC a state, as if it's a BAD thing the 700,000 of us might be represented in the Senate. A reminder that we have more residents than all of Wyoming or all of Vermont.
