#OTD in 1842 WC Cotton in New Zealand wrote to Richard Owen with evidence showing Owen was correct about the giant moa, a large, extinct, flightless bird. Owen had been ridiculed for his idea about this bird. Part of the letter is in our Proceedings:

Charles Ferguson Sharpe #paintings are only occasionally requested by our visitors and unfortunately very few are photographed. This is just one example we have out in the Reading Room today, it dates from 1888.

Today is #WorldSandDuneDay, we are highlighting one of Britain's rarest reptiles, the sand lizard. This print is in MC Cooke's "Our reptiles", publ. 1865. Our copy is very special, it was a birthday gift to Joan Procter who was to become our Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians.
