A friend suggested I post a piece of KyoAni production materials every day as a constant reminder of their legacy and I have enough to last an eternity so here we go
Shingo Yamashita brought out Chainsaw Man's spirit with his opening. The barrage of references to memorable shots from all types of films doesn't just sum up Tatsuki Fujimoto's love of cinema & influences, but also matches his constant non-sequitur turns with an eclectic sequence
The morphing animation in Penguin Highway's still one of the most inexplicably satisfying things I've seen. Watching these cute creatures bounce around's good too.
I'm glad they shared the line data for the Kaguya-sama ending because it shows just how impressive the fabric animation was. It's got those minor snaps into position that don't follow the same flow and let people guess it was rotoscoped, but it's nearly flawless otherwise.
Many works nowadays try to manufacture skin-deep nostalgia, but by naturally evoking it, Ousama Ranking can afford to combine that authentic old-school flavor with many innovative modern techniques โ as seen in its spectacular latest episode

Anime about teenagers loudly having feelings are pretty common, but few have the bold direction to match that volume, and even fewer will make those teens physically assault a drunk man on the street with a home appliance because they interrupted their outburst
Doraemon has traditionally used stylized designs to create attractive animation. This year's movie seems to be a good example of that, but what left me speechless in the latest PV is how it naturally pivots from that genius simplicity into exceptional detail too. It's got it all
Great subplot: CSM's author getting his account (where he roleplayed as his fake little sister until he decided to livetweet the anime) locked & returning with a new one, dumping sketches to prove himself, then asking wtf to do since Twitter's now nonexistent support isnt working
One of the major reasons Twilight Wings succeeded in crafting a believable Pokemon world was the compositing, and you can see that again in today's extra episode. You can't integrate these creatures into human society without equally (super)natural lighting to match them
When the Look Back movie was publicly revealed, word came from their in-betweening team of experimenting with methods to preserve the raw lines of the key animators, which is a naturally good match for Fujimoto's spontaneous style and for the theme of the work itself
In an industry where everything comes down to personal relationships, is it possible to quickly assemble an all-new, high-profile anime studio? Cygames Pictures found a way, and Uma Musume ROAD TO THE TOP's raw, expressive animation stands as proof

Pokemon Twilight Wings continues to nail aspects of the franchise that no anime had been able to capture before. Shingo Yamashita's camerawork here has that emphasis on sheer scale that's inherent to Galar but beyond that, the solemnity that meeting a majestic creature deserves
The action in this week's episode of Dungeon Meshi has a real edge that makes it stand out. Sushio's fleeing animation at the end might be one of my favorite sequences in the adaptation so far: fury but also palpable desperation in how the claws struggle to attach to the wall
Like Masanobu Hiraoka, Mirai Mizue, or even Yoh Yoshinari, Hiromatsu Shuu belongs to the select group of effects animation specialists who aren't simply proficient at drawing them, but effectively employ that seamless flow & constant morphing as the backbone of their storytelling
Should be illegal to capture the texture, weight, and consistency of takoyaki to this degree. This is why you don't let Kansai animation studios become too powerful

give that tangible contrast to make the difference between the two performances clear. Nijika's body language & looser smears are more joyful, Ryo enters her zone, Kitachan's more aware, Bocchi's more involved & energized, the stage shines brighter
The Dungeon Meshi anime is putting work into Senshi & Laios' propaganda: Momiji Mao, a mangaka and illustrator who specializes in drawing aggressively tasty-looking meals, is the show's Food Designer - a non-standard role they clarified comes in the form of color scripts
It's time for a final look at the greatest animated works of 2022. We've gathered a group of animators, directors, designers, writers, musicians, and everything in between to share their favorites of the year in the Sakugabooru Animation Awards 2022!

Kimetsu no Yaiba had used complex three-dimensional environments for its setpieces before and that made them entertaining in a very blockbuster-y way, but Terao's work in the finale is much more interesting because of the way he edited space itself

was produced by Enishiya. In an era when outsourcing has sadly become synonymous with dodgy conditions & poor resulting quality, it's great to see a small but very capable studio like them that can actually raise the bar with impressive, smart, and amusing craft
While fans tend to think about production circumstances as black and white, Frieren exemplifies what success tends to look like: resourceful management, delegation of the right tasks to the right people, and ingenious solutions to tricky situations

I love every corner of Eizouken's deliberate design nightmare of a setting, but the faculty office indoor pool might take the cake. It's the best place I never want to be in
Anime legends and very promising newcomers worked side by side to make the current arc of Houseki no Kuni / Land of the Lustrous into something spectacular. Time to learn the secrets of this production!
Love the adaptation of Tsuchika Nishimura's designs for The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store's upcoming film. The animation is adding just enough elasticity to art that, despite how angular it is, already implied (and sometimes directly showed) fun movement. Also it's cute
Yuasa's Spy x Family OP is curious because its extreme posing & goofy strides draw parallels to the likes of Shin-chan - but by not being in charge of the animation & its supervision, and also due to SpyFam being nowhere as visually radical, there's some restraint to the drawings
Layouts, the backbone of Japanese animation and its sense of immersion, are shattering. Industry veterans and newcomers point fingers: the death of studio culture & mentorship, the effect of commercialism, labor issues, but also how to address it all

Every KyoAni star among the deceased - the legend behind their animation philosophy, their warmest director, the ace animator whose designs were integral to many work's texture, veterans in art&painting departments - hurts as much as the newcomers we couldn't grow acquainted with
The style that inspired generations of the most interesting Toei animators. From the dynamism of every pose to the tendency towards slender forms that exaggerate protuberances in a charming way - and of course, the sheer joy of it all. Bless Tanaka for bringing back Yuki Hayashi

feels like the episode that truly matches the spontaneous, lax expressiveness of Ryoko Kui's art in the original manga. And it doesn't achieve that through mimicry, but rather by leaning into Ichigo Kanno & co's own traits
When directing the Tsurune film, Yamamura switched from fixed cameras to dynamic tracking shots for the archery. When moving to season 2, he kept reminding the team they weren't making a movie so they could relax - but they still got carried away, so now every episode's like this
5 years ago, we highlighted a woman who hadn't directed a single episode as one of anime's most promising figures. Today, she's the mastermind behind the most celebrated moments of TV animeโthat's Megumi Ishitani, who's genuinely too good for her job

You'll hear it a lot, but please watch Mob Psycho. A fundamentally kind series brought to life by a team that challenged the possibilities of TV anime production. With the thematic groundwork done, season 2's been one fulfilling emotional climax after the other. Instant classic.
Now that there are *two* high-profile Elf Anime airing at the same time, Frieren felt the need to deploy its strongest weapon: many variations of this shriveled grandma face
The first episode of Zom 100 is stunningly directed, joyful in animation, and simply hilarious - though no gag is funnier than the fact that "a production company so bad it's worse than the zombie apocalypse" is represented byโฆ studio OLM, which this team recently split off from
Please learn the difference.
Lusamine: Fundamentally broken, egocentric villain.
Lusanime: The kindest mom to ever grace this planet.
Lusameme: some sort of 40yo shitposting machine
Shingo Yamashita @ Colorido directing a short film about a dorky careless Pokemon trainer fumbling her way into adventure with a dorky careless Pokemon. Which is to say, perfection

. Most recent episodes he has led have trended toward the gruesome, using his sharp art to evoke visceral reactions as skin bursts into blood & blade. Dude's been making CSM before CSM
Today's KyoAni staff blog post is a simple example of the importance of in-betweening. First you have the same keyframes both finished versions use. In red you have the "wrong" in-betweening the writer drew as a newbie, in blue their own fixed version
If you're wondering where the enchanting atmosphere in Carole & Tuesday's opening comes from: Tadahiro Uesugi's concept art for the first scene and the correspondent shot.
Smart management in previous weeks allowed Dungeon Meshi's core team to flex today. Reactive, organic animation when taking down the kraken (love how it flaps when bouncing over the surface) and the way Sho Oi animated the fading spots before it loses its colors is so satisfying

is Nobutoshi Ogura's first storyboard in ~6 years, but he was given perfect material to pick up where he left off. He excels at horror and has a taste for gore, but also just as good of a grasp of high-octane, chaotic comedy. In short: this episode's exact needs
Lycoris Recoil is the surprise hit of 2022 thus far. A chaotic project that grew organically with the arrival of its director, turning uncertain circumstances into fuel for a bombastic but personable character story & a love letter to action movies

For the record this undersells how funny his new timeline is, split between screaming BELIEVE ME I'M TATSUKI FUJIMOTO at the void and ranting about how Twitter is a mess as he begs randos for a solution. The Posting Devil is thriving
Tatsurou Kawano's division at studio Colorido got officially rebranded as Team Yamahitsuji. Producing a Boruto OP with some animation assistance by Norio Matsumoto and with Shingo Yamashita's ability to present the footage as beautifully as possible is a strong debut tbh.
KyoAni also updated their recruitment pages, including interviews with people in various roles. This one with a 3DCG staff member (no name given but that's Mitsuki Takaki) is neat since it has examples of the range of their work, which surprised her too
Reminder that if you hire teams of young, materially ambitious creators because you want to exploit the bombastic appeal of their work, it's not their failing if it becomes impossible to comply with your studio's pathetic planning. *They* didn't doom the schedule, it already was
The new Cencoroll trailer's cool as hell so here's a reminder that you can read up on the history of one of anime's coolest one-man army productions. Still feels like a miracle that the sequel exists now
Mob Psycho opting out of having a CGi team entirely makes most of its bursts of background animation feel organic - trading potential polish for a very appealing, human touch to the animation. Really fits what the show is always going for
Mob Psycho may just be a bit of a naive cartoon, but seeing Mob's thesis of unshakable compassion and kindness even in the face of (in)human cruelty succeed is the best feeling. Thank you ONE, thank you Hakuyu Go, thank you ultimate good boy Mob.
Mamoru Hosoda asking an architect like Makoto Tanijiri to design the house for Mirai was central to the film. It's integrated into the narrative since the husband's an architect, and Hosoda's talked about the thematic parallels between its open staircase space and Kun's journey.
Bakuten's animation designs may not be as attractive as Robico's concept art but their qualities speak for themselves: elegant in motion, manageable while retaining the volume you want in realistic gymnastics, and the stylization allows them to coexist with the CG sorta naturally
People will be amazed at Frieren's 2 hour long premiere, but the real ballsy movie isn't even that. It will be broadcast in NTV's iconic Friday Road Show slot, which isn't meant for new titles let alone TV shows, but rather for significant theatrical works. Going all out for real
Unsurprisingly, Pop Team Epic's production is the most Pop Team Epic thing. Well worth a read if you're a fan or simply have an interest in very quirky projects.
The amount of secondary action and just the carefulness with which bodies move in that commercial is insane. Gorgeous in all regards too, it's immediately making me go check out the source material.
