Mental health advocate. PhD dropout. Walking on #southwestcoastpath #swcp
Joined June 2021
I have been in the UK for 3 months, recently completed my 630 miles walk on the South West Coast Path. I have hoped to connect with the autistic and neurodiversity communities while I'm here, especially those in academia, about possible research opportunities.

do I have to speak up for the marginalized? What ground do I have to claim that my research is making a difference? Of course it's easy for me to criticize, I'm no longer an academic so my words should carry little weight.

a leading expert in suicide research? It's a mockery of our education system. I thought I was walking the coast path for an answer, but I realised walking is my answer. If I can't speak up openly against institutional failures for fear of jeopardising my career, what right

Should a public figure of authority whose standards of academic integrity is set at such a low bar be allowed to remain in the profession? Should a person who prioritizes productivity over wellbeing hold themselves out as

my concerns seriously. What happened wasn't a careless omission but complacency, he got carried away with AI frenzy and academia's mindless pursuit for publication. Our differences in research values and ethical standards are what contributed to our strained relationship.

I spent the most of my work life in academia. I was a research assistant at the Centre for Suicide Research and Prevention (CSRP) in Hong Kong. Between 2019-23, I was doing my PhD at the Dept of Social Work & Administration, which I never

I've been travelling in the UK for the past 5 months and spent 2 months walking the South West Coast Path during the summer. 'Just a fair day' records my journey but it's not just about my travel and the weather, it's a questioning of what's just and fair.

What people have in the U.S. is a messy, loud, and often vicious debate about how to allocate resources. What people have in China is the absence of one. https://t.co/hQTfgJDfSE

Its been two years since I dropped out of my PhD and so it seems, my academia route has come to an end. Even now I still question myself if I should not have persevere to the end, despite our differences in values toward our research practice. I got my answer today.
The University of Hong Kong, #1 in 2026 QS Asia University Rankings, recently advertised using the slogan "AI for Every Mind". Local media reported today that an article co-authored by an HKU associate dean contained non-existent references, a suspected sign of AI use.🧵1⃣

On problematic citing--e.g. intentionally omitting citations that would "raise concerns about the validity of one’s work" & "reduce the apparent novelty of one’s own work"--& "intentionally misrepresenting prior articles in citations" https://t.co/AXeYTDhk7p autism-relevant, free

I think of Audre Lorde's words, "the master’s tool will never dismantle the master’s house". We can go on and on debating and advocating for systemic changes, but we are just as helpless and screwed up.
