Yes, this! There are so many examples of this in North African architecture. We not only have homes w/central courtyards that allow air to circulate but also underground homes. We whitewash the walls & use ceramic tiles (zellij) which would help keep the walls & floors cool.
Houses were built differently. I’ve been in 100+ degree weather in my home country of Portugal in the country side and was absolutely cool inside without fans or ac. Local stone is used and the vegetation/ trees all around help. Concrete and metal create more heat.
