Guys, I really like this playlist I made. Please go save it if you have Spotify. I genuinely think it’s peak, greatest of all time!!!! The mixing is still in beta, so some transitions might get glitched every once in a while https://t.co/6q80N716DV

A key moment. Serious collectors notice when a brand loses focus, while casual buyers just grab whatever’s trending. By chasing volume over artistry, Funko alienated the first group. Those are the ones who drive hype and long-term cultural relevance. But they didn’t care for ‘em.

They kept everything locked into identical body, identical pose, identical expressionless eyes. At a certain point the “style” stopped being a style and became a limitation. Standout figures worked BECAUSE they broke the formula and actually conveyed a story or moment.

That crushed the demand and made the line feel cheap instead of collectible. Funko Pop blew up at first because the designs felt novel, collectible and a little bit quirky. But the novelty only survives if the concept evolves… and they didn’t.

The downfall wasn’t inevitable. It was a failure to innovate and a misunderstanding of why people connected with the brand in the first place. They inflated their catalog to the point that shelves were overflowing with figures nobody can identify anymore.

The key difference with those two examples is that changing things up a bit actually allowed the figures to tell a story. And honestly, keeping everything overly simplistic was the wrong choice for their supposed “unique offering.” That’s not what people liked them for.

And they had all the resources to make something great! They actually DID have moments of real artistic success, the Laura Palmer figure or Britney behind the desk from …Baby One More Time. But the first was extremely limited, and the second just came out at the wrong time.

..or at least more deliberate in their choice of IPs to produce. They could’ve taken more time to develop certain ideas, but instead they kept overproducing to the point where supply completely outpaced demand. There was no life left behind those flat black eyes anymore.

Great case study in how failing to evolve your concept leads to crisis. Their figure style was cute for the first eight years, but eventually everyone got bored of how repetitive the product became. They agreed to make basically anything instead of being more intentional… (1/?)
