OTD 1999. Blackpool 2-1 Wrexham. 26 years ago today, we took about 1,200 for the season opener. We fell behind to two carbon copy headers from a certain Brett Ormerod in the 1st half. Craig Faulconbridge pulled one back on his debut. Anyone know what @B1orm is up to later? 😉

OTD 2005. Wrexham 2-0 Boston Utd. 20 years ago today, Denis Smith’s men opened their League Two campaign with a win at The Racecourse. Mark Jones scored in the first half and Lee Roche hit his first and only goal for the club late on to clinch it. “We are top of the league!”

OTD 2014 ✍️. 11 years ago today, Wrexham signed defender Manny Smith after his release from Notts County. Manny would go on to play 161 times for us over two spells before injury sadly curtailed his career prematurely. One of the best ever signings the club has made.

REFEREE WATCH. Southampton v Wrexham. The ref for our first Championship game has been selected as James Bell from South Yorkshire. James is a self proclaimed big SWFC fan and has been at this level for three seasons. In his four previous Saints games, they have won every time.

OTD 2018. Dover Athletic 0-1 Wrexham. 7 years ago, we made the long trip to Dover for our opening National League game of the season. It was Sam Ricketts’ first game in charge and Mike Fondop scored the winner with a great volley on his debut. A great start and hopes were high.

OTD 1999. Ayr United 3-0 Wrexham. 26 years ago today, our only ever previous visit to Somerset Park, with just under 100 Reds making the trip. We put out a strong first team but were convincingly beaten by the Honest Men, who would get to the Scottish Cup semi final that season.

OTD 2003. Wrexham 2-0 West Brom. 22 years ago today, we played our only first team game against WBA in over 50-odd years. Lawrence and Llewellyn netted against a team who would go on to win promotion back to the PL that season. The Baggies finally return to Wrexham in 18 days.

OTD 2010. Wrexham 1-1 Preston North End.Friendly. 15 years ago today was the last time we played Preston in a first team game. Danny Mayor put the Championship visitors in front, with Andy Mangan replying. We will finally play PNEFC competitively again in December (twice!)

OTD 2005. Newry City 1-1 Wrexham. 20 years ago this evening, we travelled over for a friendly to Newry in Northern Ireland for our first ever visit to The Showgrounds. A strong Wrexham side went behind to Damien Whitehead’s strike before Dean Bennett equalised shortly after.

OTD 2019 ✍️. 6 years ago today, Bryan Hughes signed defender Michael Chambers. He made 14 starts for Wrexham before leaving in January, and even had his own song which could be heard from the Tech End. Michael is currently enjoying his third spell at Dulwich Hamlet.

OTD 1989 ✍️. 36 years ago, local lad Steve Watkin signed his first professional contract with Wrexham. The 18yo had been prolific in the reserves. Steve went on to be a fans favourite in the 90’s, scoring many memorable goals. And he even scores at the end of our famous song!
