Good start of the new year, with a paper accepted in @SkeletalRadiol. In this paper we describe the use of weight-bearing CT in individuals with cerebral palsy to assess their foot deformity. Great multi-disciplinary collaboration within @AMSmovement! .

All this work would not have been possible without my supervisors: prof. Jaap Harlaar, prof. Mario Maas (@mmaas_mariom), dr. Josien van den Noort and dr. Marjolein van der Krogt (@Marjoleinvdk). A great example of a multi-disciplinary research team embedded within @AMSmovement.

The thesis finalizes with a general discussion in which we reflect on the clinical application of multi-segment foot models, methodological considerations and the future directions of the field of foot and ankle biomechanics during gait.

In chapter 7 (, we present the Amsterdam Foot Model, which is a novel clinically-informed multi-segment foot model. It builds upon the existing foot models and is explicitly based on minimizing the measurement errors, which are shown to be reduced in AFM.

Background Foot and ankle joint kinematics are measured during clinical gait analyses with marker-based multi-segment foot models. To improve on existing models, measurement errors due to soft tissue...

In chapter 6 (, the marker placement sensitivity is evaluated. For both models each segment is sensitive (>1°/mm) to misplacement of at least one marker. Using the midpoint between marker can improve the robustness of the models to inconsistent placement.

In chapter 5 (, soft tissue artifacts (STA) are quantified. Average marker displacements up to 9mm were found, leading to average errors up to 7° and maximum values of 12°. The markers that are most affected by STA should not be used as tracking markers.

Since we wanted to gain insight in the models measurement errors, a low-dose CT-scan protocol was developed in chapter 4 ( including 10 scans with a total radiation dose similar to 1.5 times the dose of a single clinical foot scan and similar precision.

In chapter 3 (, a kinematic comparison is performed of two of the most-frequently used multi-segment foot models: the Oxford and Rizzoli foot models. Differences were found in static and dynamic conditions and these differences did depend on the gait type.

In chapter 2 (, the output of a mono- and multi-segment musculoskeletal model are compared and differences are shown in ankle angle and muscle tendon complex lengths. These differences are even larger in children with foot deformities compared to controls.

Curious what my PhD-thesis was about? It can be downloaded here: The following provides a very, very brief description of the research we have conducted the last years. #FootBiomechanics.
